Chapter 29 - The Return to the Harbor

Victoria backed herself against the twisted remains of the metal guardrail, her breath coming in ragged, bloody gasps.

The drop behind her was sheer—two hundred feet of jagged shale down to the crashing black currents of the Hudson River.

Maya stopped five feet away, the heavy steel tire iron hanging loosely at her side.

"Go ahead," Victoria rasped, a bloody, defiant sneer spreading across her ruined face. "Kill me. Show everyone you’re just as ruthless as the family you married into."

Maya looked down at the woman who had terrorized an entire bloodline for thirty years.

Victoria wasn't an untouchable titan anymore.

She was a shivering, pathetic old woman broken against the asphalt, terrified of the very dark she had forced upon others.

"You're not worth the prison sentence, Victoria," Maya said, her voice cutting through the wind with absolute clarity.

Victoria blinked, caught off guard. "You... you're not going to push me?"

"No," Maya whispered. "Pushing someone is your trademark. Cowards push people into the dark so they don't have to watch them die."

Maya dropped the heavy tire iron onto the road.

It clattered against the asphalt with a dull, hollow thud.

In the distance, the wailing sirens of multiple emergency vehicles echoed up the Palisades Parkway.

Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the rain-slicked trees a mile down the winding road.

"The police are coming, Victoria," Maya said calmly. "And Clara is alive. Her testimony will ensure you spend every remaining breath of your life in a maximum-security medical facility. No money. No yachts. No empire. Just four white walls and your own rotting thoughts."

Victoria’s eyes widened with a terror far worse than death.

To a woman whose entire existence was built on absolute control, reputation, and untouchable wealth, a cage was the ultimate hell.

"I won't let them lock me away," Victoria hissed, her voice trembling with manic desperation. "I am Victoria Vance! This city belongs to me!"

Victoria scrambled toward the edge of the broken railing, attempting to lunge over the cliff into the black void.

Maya moved instantly.

She didn't let Victoria fall.

Maya grabbed the fabric of Victoria’s soaked gown and dragged her violently back onto the solid asphalt, pinning the thrashing matriarch against the ground.

"You don't get the easy way out," Maya whispered fiercely into Victoria's ear. "You stay alive. You face what you built."

Two police cruisers and an ambulance roared around the bend, their high-beams locking onto the scene.

Officers jumped out with weapons drawn, quickly realizing the situation, rushing forward to secure Victoria in heavy steel handcuffs.

Maya stepped back, hands raised, letting the officers take over.

She watched as they strapped Victoria onto a gurney, Victoria screaming obscenities into the rainy night, completely unhinged, her aristocratic mask shattered forever.

A second ambulance pulled up beside them.

The rear doors opened, and Julian stepped out, his face bandaged, his clothes torn and drenched.

Behind him in the ambulance, Clara sat on a stretcher, wrapped in heavy thermal blankets, receiving oxygen.

Clara looked through the open doors and locked eyes with Maya.

For the first time, Clara offered a small, solemn nod of genuine respect.

Julian slowly walked toward Maya through the flashing blue lights, his head bowed, looking utterly devastated.

"Maya..." Julian whispered, stopping a few feet away, afraid to step any closer. "The police took her. It's over."

Maya looked at her husband—the man who had loved her, but whose love had been born from a lie.

"Is it over, Julian?" Maya asked quietly.

"I signed the papers in the ambulance," Julian said, his voice cracking with tears. "I renounced every single dollar of the Vance trust. Every port, every property, every account. I transferred full legal ownership of the estate to you and Clara. The bloodline rights belong to Marcus Reed’s daughters. Not me."

Julian looked at her with pleading, broken eyes.

"I don't care about the money, Maya," he sobbed. "I never did. I just wanted a life with you that wasn't poisoned by my mother."

Maya looked at the golden wedding ring glinting on her wet finger.

She slowly pulled it off her skin and held it out to him.

"You can't build a clean life on top of a poisoned foundation, Julian," Maya said softly.

May you like

She dropped the ring into his trembling palm, turned her back on him, and walked toward the waiting ambulance where her sister was sitting.
