Chapter 7 - Blood in the Basement

The subterranean level of the Sterling building smelled of ozone, hot copper, and damp concrete.
Row after row of towering black server racks hummed with a deafening, rhythmic roar, their tiny blue and red indicator lights blinking rhythmically in the dark.
Julian crouched behind the end of aisle four, his laptop plugged directly into the master terminal.
His fingers flew across the keyboard, executing lines of code to lock out the offshore transfer scripts.
Maya stood ten feet away at the end of the aisle, her back pressed against the cold concrete wall, holding her breath, listening to the hollow drip of water somewhere in the shadows.
"I’m eighty percent through," Julian hissed under his breath, the blue light of the screen reflecting off his sweat-slicked forehead.
"Hurry," Maya whispered back, her grip tightening on the pistol.
"I don't like this quiet."
Suddenly, a heavy metallic clang echoed from the far end of the basement corridor.
Footsteps.
Heavy, deliberate boots crunching on loose gravel.
Maya raised her weapon, aiming down the long, dimly lit aisle between the server racks.
"Julian, someone’s here," she whispered urgently.
"Give me thirty seconds," Julian muttered, his teeth clenched as the progress bar on his screen crept forward slowly.
*90%... 91%...*
A shadow flickered against the far wall.
Then another.
Two men stepped into the aisle, both dressed in tactical black gear, their faces hidden behind dark balaclavas, automatic rifles raised.
"Found him," one of them rasped into a comms unit.
Before they could raise their weapons to fire, Maya pulled the trigger.
The deafening roar of the gunshot shattered the quiet hum of the servers.
The bullet struck the concrete floor an inch from the lead operative’s boot, sending a shower of gray sparks flying.
"Contact!" the operative shouted, returning fire.
Bullets chewed through the metal casing of the server racks, sending a blizzard of shredded paper and sparking wires raining down around them.
"Maya, get down!" Julian yelled, diving off his stool and grabbing her waist, pulling her behind the thick steel housing of the primary mainframe.
Bullets pinged violently off the metal shield just inches above their heads.
"Ninety-nine percent," Julian yelled over the deafening noise, hitting the final enter key with his palm.
A sharp chime echoed from the laptop.
*TRANSFER ABORTED. ASSETS SECURED.*
"Done!" Julian shouted.
The two operatives were advancing down the aisle now, their boots closing the distance rapidly, weapons locked and loaded.
Julian grabbed Maya’s hand, pulling her toward the emergency maintenance stairwell at the back of the server room.
They burst through the heavy steel door just as a volley of automatic gunfire slammed into the wood behind them, splintering it into a thousand pieces.

They didn't look back.
They ran up the concrete stairs three at a time, their lungs burning, driven by pure adrenaline and the desperate will to survive.
