Chapter 12 - Flatline

Adrenaline is a miracle drug.

With the last shred of strength in my left arm, I didn't pull away—I grabbed the entire IV pole and wrenched it sideways with all my body weight.

The heavy steel stand crashed over with a deafening rattle. The plastic IV bag ripped from its hook. The needle tore violently out of my vein, spraying blood across the white sheets.

Brenda stumbled backward, the syringe flying from her hand and shattering on the tile floor.

"You little bitch!" she hissed, lunging forward with open hands to pin my neck against the pillow.

Her fingers clamped down on my windpipe. The air cut off instantly. My surgical incision felt like it was tearing open under the strain, fiery agony exploding across my abdomen. Black spots danced before my eyes.

Suddenly, the door blew inward.

Julian’s forearm caught Brenda under the jaw with the force of a battering ram.

She flew sideways, her head slamming into the metal bedside table before she crumpled onto the floor, unconscious.

Julian was over her in a heartbeat, his boot pinned to her sternum, his chest heaving. Two hospital security guards and Detective Croft burst into the room behind him, guns drawn.

"Secure her!" Croft shouted.

Julian dropped to his knees beside my bed, pulling the emergency call button, his hands frantic as he pressed a sterile towel against the bleeding puncture wound in my arm.

"Clara! Clara, look at me!"

"The baby..." I wheezed, my throat bruised and raw. "Is he..."

"He’s alive," Julian choked out, tears spilling freely down his face. "He’s in an incubator, Clara. Six pounds, four ounces. He’s breathing on his own. He has your eyes."

The tension in my chest snapped like a frayed wire. I let out a broken, shuddering sob.

Croft bent down, plucked the shattered fragments of the syringe from the floor using a sterile glove, and sealed them into an evidence bag.

"Potassium chloride," Croft said, sniffing the liquid on the needle tip with grim disgust. "Instant cardiac arrest. It would have looked like an embolism from the C-section."

Croft pulled Brenda’s phone from her uniform pocket. The screen lit up with a notification from an encrypted app:

*Is it done? The jet is fueled at Hanscom Field.*

The sender: *Evelyn.*

"Hanscom Field," Julian said, his voice dropping into an icy register that sent chills through the room. "She’s leaving the country."

"Not on my watch," Croft said, tapping his radio. "Federal dispatch, this is Croft. Flag tail number November-Eight-Four-Victor-Alpha at Hanscom. Warrant for federal conspiracy and attempted murder."

Julian stood up, looking at me.

"Go," I whispered, holding his hand. "Don't let her leave. End this."

"I’ll be back with her head on a plate," Julian promised, kissing my forehead with fierce devotion. "Watch our son."
