Chapter 13 - The Runway Standoff

The freezing wind at Hanscom Airfield was howling at forty knots, whipping snow sideways across the tarmac.

Evelyn Vance stood at the foot of the Gulfstream G550’s air-stairs, her mink coat pulled tight against the gale. Two large titanium briefcases sat at the feet of her private security driver. Inside those cases was thirty-two million dollars in bearer bonds, untraceable bearer certificates, and the remaining gold reserves of the Vance family foundation.

"Why haven't they cleared the runway?" Evelyn screamed over the roar of the jet’s twin Rolls-Royce engines.

"Tower says there’s a ground stop, ma'am!" the pilot shouted back from the cabin door. "State Police are closing the perimeter gates!"

"Bribe them!" she shrieked, her aristocratic mask completely shattered into raw, feral desperation. "I pay them five hundred thousand a year! Tell them to open the damn gate!"

*SCREEECH.*

A black SUV blew through the airfield security barrier, sending wood splinters and warning lights flying across the tarmac. It drifted violently on the ice, tires smoking, before coming to a halt twenty yards from the jet’s nose cone.

Julian kicked the driver’s door open and stepped out into the blizzard.

He wore no coat. Just a dark sweater, his jaw set like granite, walking straight toward the plane through the swirling snow.

"Julian!" Evelyn sneered, backing up one step toward the stairs. "You idiot! You think you can stop this? You're a bastard orphan! Arthur’s little charity project! You don't have a penny to your name without my signature!"

"Keep the money, Evelyn," Julian shouted over the engine whine, his voice carrying like thunder across the tarmac. "Every single dime. Because where you're going, you won't even be allowed to buy your own soap."

The driver reached into his coat for a weapon.

*BANG.*

A single shot echoed from behind Julian’s SUV. The driver screamed, clutching his shattered wrist as his pistol clattered to the frozen asphalt. Marcus Croft stepped out from behind the SUV, his rifle trained dead-center on the driver’s forehead.

"Federal agents!" Croft bellowed. "Step away from the stairs! Down on your knees! NOW!"

Four State Police cruisers tore onto the runway, blue and red strobe lights painting the falling snow in violent shades of crimson and sapphire. Sirens wailed like banshees.

Evelyn looked at the surrounding cruisers. She looked at Croft’s rifle. Then she looked at Julian.

She didn't drop to her knees. She drew herself up to her full, haughty height, her lip curling in disgust.

"You will always be Arthur’s filthy little street rat," she spat at Julian. "I should have drowned you in the Charles River the day he brought you home."

"You tried," Julian said softly, stopping five feet from her. "You tried with me. You tried with my wife. You tried with my son. But you failed, Evelyn. Every single time."

He reached out, grabbed the two titanium briefcases from the stairs, and kicked them into the snow at Croft’s feet.

"Evelyn Vance," Croft announced, stepping forward with heavy steel cuffs. "You are under arrest for the attempted murder of Clara Vance, the attempted murder of your grandson, corporate embezzlement, and the first-degree murder of Arthur Vance."

Evelyn’s head snapped toward Croft. "What? Arthur died of heart failure!"

"We exhumed Arthur’s body three hours ago with an emergency federal order, Evelyn," Croft said coldly, clicking the cuffs around her frail wrists. "The state medical examiner found twenty times the lethal dose of arsenic in his bone marrow. You poisoned him for nine months. And Brenda Walsh just sang like a canary."

Evelyn’s knees finally gave out. She collapsed into the snow, screaming obscenities as the troopers dragged her toward the back of a police cruiser.
