Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Ambush

At 8:30 AM, Courtroom 4B of the Suffolk County District Court was packed with reporters.

Evelyn Vance sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in immaculate charcoal cashmere, a black silk scarf draped over her shoulders. She looked like the picture of grief-stricken patrician dignity. Megan sat beside her, dabbing her dry eyes with a monogrammed handkerchief, wearing a neck brace she clearly didn't need.

Julian stood at the defense table in an orange prison jumpsuit, his hands cuffed to a chain around his waist. He looked hollowed out, staring down at the wooden table. His court-appointed public defender was whispering urgently in his ear, but Julian wasn't listening.

He thought I was dead.

The news of the Gloucester fire had broken on local radio forty minutes ago: *Unidentified body suspected in harbor storage explosion.*

"All rise," the bailiff chanted.

Judge Patricia Vance-Holt (no relation, but an old friend of Evelyn’s social circle) took the bench.

"We are here for the arraignment and bail hearing of Julian Vance," the prosecutor said, standing up. "The Commonwealth moves for remand without bail. The defendant poses an extreme danger to the community. Yesterday evening, he brutally assaulted his sister, Megan Vance, and in the ensuing violence, his wife Clara Vance was thrown down a flight of stairs. Clara Vance subsequently fled the hospital in a state of delirium and is currently unaccounted for."

Evelyn let out a soft, theatrical sob from the gallery.

"Your Honor," Julian’s public defender stammered, "my client has no prior criminal record—"

"The Commonwealth has provided evidence of severe mental deterioration," the judge interrupted coldly. "Given the severity of the charges and the defendant's volatile behavior, bail is—"

The heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom slammed open.

The wood hit the plaster with the force of a gunshot.

The entire courtroom turned. Reporters gasped. Cameras whirred to life.

I walked down the center aisle.

My clothes were scorched, my face was streaked with soot, and my left arm was wrapped in a rough bandage from the splintered wood of the pier. But my back was straight. My belly was high. And my eyes were locked straight onto Evelyn Vance.

"Bail is unnecessary, Your Honor," I declared, my voice ringing through the high rafters of the courtroom like a church bell. "Because the charges are based on perjury, attempted murder, and corporate fraud."

Megan’s jaw dropped. She turned dead white, gripping the mahogany pew until her knuckles cracked.

Evelyn slowly rose to her feet, her mask of grief slipping for a fraction of a second, revealing the snarling, venomous predator beneath.

"You..." Evelyn hissed under her breath.

May you like

"Me," I said, stepping past the gallery rail. "And I brought receipts."
