Chapter 15 - The Fire in the Hearth

Three weeks later, the colonial mansion on Beacon Hill was silent.

Not the heavy, oppressive silence of fear that had choked these halls for decades, but the clean, empty silence of a house stripped bare.

Julian had hired three moving crews to clear out the entire estate. Every antique portrait of the Vance ancestors, every gold-leaf mirror, every piece of heavy mahogany furniture that Evelyn had cherished had been cataloged and sent to public auction, with every penny of the proceeds directed to a pediatric trauma foundation in Boston.

The grand staircase where I had nearly lost my life was covered in drop cloths. A crew of carpenters was tearing out the polished oak steps, replacing them with warm, reclaimed American chestnut.

Julian and I stood in the grand salon before the massive limestone fireplace.

A small fire crackled in the grate.

In Julian's hands was the original, gold-embossed ledger of the Vance Family Trust—the physical book that Evelyn had used to control, manipulate, and terrorize everyone who carried her name.

"Ready?" Julian asked, looking down at me.

In my arms, Leo slept peacefully, bundled in a cream knit sweater.

"More than ready," I said.

Julian tossed the leather ledger into the heart of the flames.

The dry parchment caught instantly. The gold lettering blistered and blackened. The names, the false debts, the forged signatures, and the decades of generational cruelty twisted into glowing curls of orange ash, sucked up the chimney into the cold Massachusetts sky.

Julian wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me and our son close against his side.

We watched the last page turn to dust.

The Vance empire was dead.

And from its ashes, our family was finally born.
