Chapter 12 - The Cellblock Whisper

The maximum-security visitor wing of Bedford Hills smelled of bleach, industrialized floor wax, and human despair. Heavy steel doors slammed with the finality of dropped guillotines, echoing down the cinderblock corridors.
Ethan Vance sat behind the reinforced partition, his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists on the stainless-steel ledge. He had sworn to God and to Claire that he would never breathe the same air as Eleanor Vance again. Yet here he was, staring at the heavy metal door on the other side of the glass.
The latch buzzed loudly. Two armed guards escorted a frail figure into the booth.
Eleanor Vance had aged twenty years in six months. Her meticulously sculpted silver hair was now a tangled, faded gray, clipped back with cheap plastic pins. The couture Chanel suits that had defined her reign as the iron matriarch of Manhattan were replaced by a faded orange jumpsuit that hung off her gaunt collarbones. But when she lifted her head, her eyes burned with the same cold, reptilian venom that had chilled Ethan since childhood.
She picked up the plastic telephone receiver with a clinking rattle of handcuffs. Ethan slowly lifted his receiver.
"You look well, my darling," Eleanor purred, her voice raspy from disuse. "Marriage suits you. Or are you merely playing house until the truth chokes you both to death?"
"Who was in that photograph, Eleanor?" Ethan's voice was devoid of filial affection, cold as dry ice. "Don't play games with me. The necklace was destroyed in the evidence vault. I watched the state police incinerate the counterfeit molds."
Eleanor let out a dry, rattling laugh that turned into a hacking cough. "Counterfeit molds? Oh, Ethan. You brilliant, naive fool. You inherited your father’s square jaw, but none of his cunning."
She leaned forward, pressing her pallid forehead against the scratched glass, her yellowed teeth bared in a grotesque grin.
"You really believe your father died in that private jet crash over the Atlantic twelve years ago?"
A shockwave ripped through Ethan’s nervous system, but he kept his expression frozen. "I buried Marcus Vance. We had a closed casket. The flight recorder was recovered. The DNA matched."
"The DNA matched a tooth and a severed hand, you idiot!" Eleanor hissed, her eyes widening with feverish intensity. "Marcus didn't die because of mechanical failure. He vanished because the syndicate he helped build was coming to collect its debts! The necklace Claire wore wasn't just jewelry. It was a digital key—a ledger containing every hidden account, every offshore vessel, every soul Marcus bought and sold!"
Ethan’s grip on the plastic receiver creaked under the pressure of his fingers. "Claire's mother, Sarah... she died for that necklace. You murdered her."

"I took the fall for it!" Eleanor slammed her cuffed hands against the counter, causing the guard behind her to drop a heavy hand onto his stun baton. Eleanor leaned back, smiling wickedly. "Sarah didn't steal it from me. Sarah was Marcus’s mistress, Ethan. And your little bride Claire? She isn't just an orphan from the lower east side. She’s your half-sister."
