Chapter 15 - The Coroner’s Ransom

Miles away on the rain-slicked highway, Ethan’s phone connected to an unlisted line. While speeding toward the estate, he had used a secured law-enforcement channel provided by the state prosecutor who had put Eleanor away.

"Dr. Aris Thorne," Ethan barked as the line clicked.

"Who is this? How did you get this secure number?" demanded a raspy, elderly voice.

"This is Ethan Vance. And you have exactly ten seconds to tell me why you signed my father’s death certificate twelve years ago, or I will hand the FBI the encrypted Cayman transaction records that show a half-million-dollar deposit into your offshore retirement account the morning after the funeral."

A sharp intake of breath hissed over the phone. The rustle of paper and the clatter of dropped medicine bottles betrayed the retired coroner's panic.

"Vance... Ethan, listen to me," Dr. Thorne stammered, his voice trembling on the verge of tears. "I had no choice! You don't know who your father worked for! You think Eleanor was the monster? Eleanor was just Marcus's watchdog! Marcus ran the global antiquities network for the syndicate!"

"Did you identify his body or not?" Ethan screamed, swerving his car through a red light, rain hammering against the glass.

"There was no body!" Thorne sobbed. "Marcus delivered a medical cadaver from a prison hospital in Eastern Europe, along with dental records he had surgically altered years in advance! He paid me to sign the death certificate so he could disappear before the federal indictments dropped! He took the real master key—the blue sapphire—and left a decoy for Eleanor to fight over!"

"The DNA!" Ethan demanded, veins bulging along his neck. "What about Claire Montgomery? Is she my father’s daughter?"

A heavy pause settled over the line.

"No," Thorne whispered. "No, Ethan. Sarah Montgomery was Marcus’s greatest enemy. She was an undercover operative for the Department of Justice who infiltrated the syndicate twenty-five years ago. Marcus fell in love with her, but when she discovered the syndicate's plan to weaponize the offshore network, she stole the encryption keys and fled with her newborn baby girl. Claire's father was an honest cop named David Montgomery, who died protecting Sarah."

The suffocating weight that had crushed Ethan's chest since his visit with Eleanor suddenly lifted, replaced by a cold, incandescent rage. Eleanor had lied. Claire was not his sister. Claire was the daughter of the woman Marcus Vance had hunted across the world for a quarter of a century.

"And Marcus?" Ethan asked through gritted teeth. "Where has he been?"

"He's been watching," Thorne cried. "He let you tear down Eleanor because Eleanor had grown greedy and erratic! He used you, Ethan! You broke Eleanor’s defenses, dismantled the family security apparatus, and cleared the way for Marcus to walk straight back into his kingdom!"

Ethan crushed the phone against the steering wheel, his headlights finally cutting through the iron gates of the Vance estate.

The security gates had been ripped open, their heavy hydraulic arms severed with precision industrial torches.
