Chapter 14 - Shadows Over the Sanctuary

At the Vance estate, the power cut out with a deafening pop of circuit breakers, plunging the cavernous mansion into absolute, suffocating blackness.

Down in the subterranean cellar beneath the west wing, Claire froze. The beam of her industrial flashlight swept across rows of dust-covered vintage bottles, antique barrels, and stone archways that had stood since the late nineteenth century.

"Ethan?" she called out, her voice swallowed by the damp stone walls.

There was no answer, only the steady drip... drip... drip... of water leaking through an old limestone fissure.

A chill crawled down Claire's spine that had nothing to do with the cellar's temperature. She had lived in poverty, fought through orphanages, and survived the terrifying rage of Eleanor Vance, but the silence hanging in the house tonight felt distinctly predatory.

She turned the flashlight toward the heavy oak staircase leading back to the ground floor.

*Clack.*

The sound of leather shoes striking stone echoed from the top of the stairs. It wasn't Ethan’s rapid, athletic stride, nor was it Mrs. Higgins’s dragging shuffle. It was a measured, aristocratic cadence. Slow. Deliberate. The footsteps of an owner surveying his property.

Claire backed away, ducking into the narrow alcove between two towering wine racks. She clicked her flashlight off, holding her breath, her hand flying instinctively to the small golden band Ethan had placed on her finger.

The beam of a high-powered tactical light pierced the darkness at the base of the stairs, carving long, monstrous shadows across the vaulted ceiling.

A figure emerged from the stairwell. Tall, draped in an impeccably tailored charcoal overcoat, his silver-black hair brushed smoothly back. He walked with a slight limp, leaning lightly on a silver-tipped walking cane. When he paused under the center archway, the man pulled off his black leather gloves, finger by finger.

Claire’s eyes widened in horror. She had seen oil portraits of Marcus Vance hanging in the grand gallery before Ethan had ordered them taken down and burned. The portrait had depicted a man in his prime, cold and commanding. The man standing fifteen feet away was older, his face lined with silver stubble and etched with scars, but the cruel, high cheekbones and icy slate-gray eyes were unmistakable.

Marcus Vance was alive.

The older man stopped. He didn't search the room frantically. Instead, he smiled, his deep, resonant baritone echoing off the stone walls.

"You have your mother's posture, Claire," Marcus said smoothly, his eyes scanning the darkness directly toward her alcove. "Sarah always had a habit of breathing through her teeth when she was terrified. Come out, child. I didn't travel halfway across the globe to play hide-and-seek with my own blood."
