Chapter 18 - Fractured Trust

"Don't do it, Claire!" Ethan yelled, lunging forward despite the rifle aimed at his chest. The mercenary struck him again, sending him crashing onto his side, but Ethan’s eyes never left Claire's. "He’s going to kill us both the moment the vault opens!"
Claire looked at Ethan, tears shimmering in her eyes. She saw the bruises forming on his face, saw the desperate love that had defied his monstrous family from the very beginning. She knew what Marcus Vance was capable of; she had seen the aftermath of his cruelty etched into her mother’s dying face years ago.
"I won't let him kill you," Claire whispered, her voice cracking.
She turned her face toward Marcus, exposing the pale skin of her neck, right over the carotid artery where her pulse thudded with frantic intensity.
Marcus smiled, a chilling expression of triumph. He pressed the cold metal node of the scanner against Claire's skin.
The machine let out a high-pitched whine as it mapped the cardiovascular rhythm against the encrypted database. On the terminal screen, a loading bar flashed green: *BIOMETRIC CONFIRMATION: 45%... 70%... 95%...*
*BEEP.*
*VAULT ACCESS GRANTED. ARCHIVE OVERRIDE INITIATED.*
Across the back wall of the ancient wine cellar, a massive steel security plate, concealed behind century-old masonry for thirty years, groaned as hydraulic pressure released. Thick plumes of pressurized dust shot out from the seams as the four-ton vault door slowly rolled back.
Inside lay rows of military-grade black server towers, blinking with thousands of amber lights, flanked by stacks of untraceable gold bullion and sealed titanium lockboxes.
"Magnificent," Victoria whispered, stepping past her brother toward the open vault, her eyes dilated with intoxicating avarice. "Thirty years of uninterrupted financial and political leverage."
Marcus lowered the scanner, stepping away from Claire. He didn't order the guards to untie her. Instead, he pulled a compact, custom-built silver automatic pistol from beneath his overcoat and casually leveled it at the back of Ethan’s head.
"Father," Ethan said quietly, his voice dangerously calm from the floor. "You always said a Vance keeps his word."
"A Vance keeps his word to equals, Ethan," Marcus replied, his finger resting gently on the trigger. "You chose your side when you chose Sarah Montgomery’s spawn over your own bloodline."
"Wait!" Claire screamed. "Marcus, look inside the central server console! Look at the interface before you pull that trigger!"
Marcus paused, his slate-gray eyes narrowing as he glanced sideways toward the vault.
The amber lights on the server towers had suddenly flashed red. A robotic digital chime began counting down through the subterranean chamber.
