Chapter 13 - The Ghost of Geneva

The smoke on the West Side Highway cleared to reveal a slaughterhouse of surgical precision. Maya Cruz moved like a wraith through the chemical fog, her suppressed MP7 barking in precise, two-round bursts. Each trigger pull resulted in a lifeless body dropping onto the wet asphalt. When her magazine ran dry, she did not reload; she stepped inside the guard of a charging mercenary, caught his rifle barrel with her left forearm, drove a combat blade straight under his chin into the brainstem, and stripped his sidearm in a single fluid motion.

Within two minutes, seven elite private military operators lay dead around the armored Maybach.

Maya stood panting slightly in the cool river mist, her blade dripping crimson onto the highway lines. She walked over to the last surviving mercenary, who was pinned beneath the crumpled bumper of his van, clutching a shattered femur.

She knelt beside him, placing the hot muzzle of her weapon against the bridge of his nose. "Whose payroll, soldier? Speak, or I let the diesel fire reach your fuel tank."

The man coughed blood, his teeth painted scarlet, but his eyes were filled with a fanatic's terror. "You... you think you broke the Sterlings? Victoria was just the puppet. The Swiss accounts... they were unlocked this morning. Lord Julian has returned to the board."

Inside the Maybach, Eleanor lowered the reinforced glass by two inches. Her face, usually an unreadable marble mask, suddenly drained of all color.

"Julian," Eleanor whispered. The name came out not as an exclamation, but as an ancient, unhealed wound. "Julian is dead. Alexander watched his jet plunge into the Jungfrau peaks seven years ago."

"His body was never recovered, Mother," Alexander said, stepping out of the vehicle despite Maya's hand gesture warning him back. His tailored coat was flecked with rain and soot, but his eyes burned with an icy, lethal clarity. "We assumed the avalanche consumed the wreckage. We were naive."

Maya stripped a tactical encrypted radio from the dead commander's tactical vest. The device was blinking with an unlisted frequency, routed through an offshore satellite array in Liechtenstein.

Suddenly, the speaker on the radio hissed with static. A refined, aristocratic voice—rich, melodic, and chillingly calm—spoke directly through the speaker.

"Bravo, Colonel Cruz. I see the rumors regarding your discharge from Delta Force’s black division were vastly overstated. You remain an extraordinary blunt instrument."

Alexander stepped forward, snatching the radio from Maya’s hand. "Julian."

"Ah, Alexander," the voice purred with sickening intimacy. "Look at you. Wearing your father’s mantle, pretending you understand the machinery of the modern world. You put my darling niece in an orange jumpsuit. You forced a Sterling to scrub kitchen grease. Did you truly believe a multi-generational sovereign bloodline would permit such insolence without burning your city to the foundation?"

"Your niece assaulted an eighty-five-year-old matriarch in broad daylight," Alexander responded, his voice steady as granite. "Her punishment was lenient. Yours will not be."

"Is that a threat, boy?" Julian chuckled, a sound like dry autumn leaves scraping over a marble tomb. "Look to your stock exchange when the bell rings in six hours. Look to your sovereign debt reserves in Zurich. Your father made the mistake of thinking ethics could anchor an empire. I will show you what happens when an empire is wielded by men with no souls. Give my love to Eleanor. Tell her... the debt she thought was settled forty years ago has accrued forty years of compounding interest."

The radio emitted a high-pitched beep and fried its internal circuitry, leaving a wisp of gray smoke curling out of the speaker.

Alexander crushed the melted device under the heel of his Italian leather shoe. He turned to Maya. "Colonel, activate Protocol Tartarus. Call every black-budget asset we own from London to Tokyo. If Julian Sterling wants a financial apocalypse, we will bring the sun down on his head."
