Chapter 16 - The Infiltration of MDC

Two hours earlier, the raid on the Metropolitan Detention Center had been executed with the silent, terrifying efficiency of a ghost operation.

Victoria had been huddled in the corner of her cold, concrete solitary cell, shivering uncontrollably. The wax note had promised rescue, but the chilling instinct in her gut told her that Julian didn't rescue failures; he liquidated them.

The ventilation shaft above her cell had suddenly ceased humming. Then, the steel heavy-gauge screws holding the reinforced iron grate dropped silently onto her thin mattress, followed by a dark, supple figure descending without a sound.

Victoria opened her mouth to scream, but a gloved hand clamped over her face like a vise.

"Make one sound, and I leave you here for the two guards currently walking down the tier with potassium cyanide syringes," a cold, familiar voice whispered in the dark.

Victoria’s eyes adjusted to the dim emergency light. Staring down at her through tactical lenses was Maya Cruz.

"You?" Victoria choked out as Maya removed her hand. "You work for Vance! You put me in here!"

"And now I'm pulling you out because your beloved uncle wants you dead," Maya said, tossing a black tactical jumpsuit and a pair of boots onto the cot. "Get dressed. You have forty-five seconds before the suppression charges detonate in the main breaker room."

"Why would Alexander save me?" Victoria’s voice shook, her arrogant facade shattered into jagged, pathetic fragments. "I insulted his mother. I slapped her. I destroyed your restaurant."

"Alexander didn't order this rescue," Maya said, securing an extraction harness around Victoria's waist with brutal efficiency. "Eleanor did."

Victoria froze, her boot half-on. "Eleanor? That... that old woman?"

"She said no one executes an American prisoner on her watch, not even a spoiled, venomous snake like you," Maya muttered, checking her wrist-mounted timer. "Three. Two. One."

*BOOM.*

A low-frequency kinetic shockwave rattled the concrete floor. The emergency lights died instantly, plunging the cell block into pitch-black chaos. Klaxons began to wail, but the sprinkler system didn't activate—Maya had already hijacked the facility’s automated security protocols through a remote worm.

Maya hauled Victoria up into the service duct with one arm, demonstrating a level of strength that defied human anatomy. They crawled through forty yards of narrow, greasy ductwork until they reached the roof access hatch.

Outside, a private tactical helicopter painted in matte-gray anti-radar coating was hovering six feet above the gravel roof, its rotors cutting through the morning mist like giant scythes.

A guard burst through the roof access door, raising a shotgun. "Halt! Down on the—"

Maya didn't even look. She drew her sidearm from its thigh holster, fired a single non-lethal rubber-jacketed slug that struck the guard directly in the solar plexus, knocking him flat on his back, gasping for air.

She shoved Victoria into the open bay of the helicopter, climbing in right behind her as the chopper banked hard over the East River, banking toward Manhattan's glittering skyline.

Victoria collapsed onto the helicopter floor, weeping from pure adrenaline and terror. She looked up at Maya, who was calmly re-chambering her weapon.

"Where... where are you taking me?"

May you like

Maya looked down at her with cold, unblinking eyes. "To face the woman you slapped."
