Chapter 14 - Cold Steel and Counter-Surveillance

At 03:00 AM, the penthouse suite of the Vance Sovereign Tower was transformed into an offshore war room. High-resolution holographic displays projected real-time satellite telemetry, global banking transaction flows, and intercept reports across thirty-foot panoramic screens.
Eleanor sat in her high-backed mahogany chair, sipping chamomile tea as if the assassination attempt three hours earlier had been nothing more than an inconvenient thunderstorm. Beside her, three senior analysts from Vance Sovereign’s intelligence branch were typing frantically.
"He didn't just hire mercenaries, Alexander," Eleanor said, pointing a steady, wrinkled finger at a cascading waterfall of red numbers on the main financial screen. "Look at the dark-pool liquidity draining from our European infrastructure funds. Julian is shorting our primary holdings using sovereign wealth proxies from the Gulf."
Maya strode into the room, having changed into a fresh black combat suit. She carried a locked titanium hard-case.
"The hit team wasn't meant to kill you on the highway," Maya declared, tossing the case onto the central conference table. The latches popped with an audible hiss of vacuum pressure.
Inside lay three cylindrical silver ampoules surrounded by liquid nitrogen cooling coils.
"What is that?" Alexander asked, leaning over the table.
"A weaponized neuro-inhibitor developed by a rogue bioweapons lab in Novosibirsk," Maya said, her jaw tight. "The mercenary commander’s phone had an encrypted blueprint of the Metropolitan Detention Center's ventilation grid. They weren't trying to rescue Victoria. They were going to gas the lower wing, kill Victoria to keep her silent, and frame the Vance Trust for an inmate assassination."
"They want to eliminate the weak link," Alexander realized, his eyes narrowing. "Victoria knows the routing numbers for Julian's offshore black accounts. She was the signatory for the holding companies that laundered their political bribes."
"And if she dies in custody while our lawsuits are pending, the media will declare it a targeted hit by the Vance family to silence a witness," Eleanor added, her silver eyes blazing with outrage. "The public backlash would trigger a federal investigation, freezing our assets while Julian strips our corporate skeleton clean."
"Then we have to secure Victoria," Alexander said.
"Securing her won't be enough," Maya countered, racking the slide of her Kimber .45 pistol with a sharp metallic clack. "The MDC is already compromised. I ran a background sweep on the third-shift guards assigned to her block. Two of them had offshore bank deposits of five hundred thousand dollars cleared through the Caymans yesterday afternoon. She won't survive until breakfast."
Eleanor set her porcelain cup down with absolute silence. The delicate china did not rattle against the saucer.
"Then go get her, Maya," the old woman commanded softly. "Bring that arrogant, insolent girl here. She humiliated me. She struck me. She took everything she had for granted. But she is an American citizen under federal custody, and no foreign-backed ghost from my past will butcher a woman on my soil just to hide his own cowardice."
Alexander looked at his mother, then turned to Maya. "You have sixty minutes before shift change. Go."

Maya pulled a black balaclava over her face. "Consider her checked out."
