Chapter 6 - The Secret in the Wheelchair

"Wait!"

A sharp, desperate voice cut through the despair.

It was Richard Sterling. The disgraced CFO scrambled to his feet, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead. His eyes darted toward the exit, then back to Alexander. Unlike his niece, Richard had spent forty years in the cutthroat trenches of international espionage and corporate warfare. He knew when a game was lost—and he knew when to flip the table.

"You think you’ve won, Vance?" Richard snarled, his voice trembling with an ugly, cornered desperation. He reached into his tuxedo jacket.

Maya’s eyes narrowed instantly. "Alexander, down!"

In a flash of motion, Richard pulled a compact, snub-nosed .38 revolver from his inner pocket. He didn't aim at Alexander. He didn't aim at Maya.

He aimed straight at Eleanor Vance’s heart.

"Nobody moves!" Richard shrieked, his finger tightening on the trigger. "You call off your Zurich dogs right now, Vance! You sign an unconditional release of all claims, or I swear to Almighty God I will paint this wheelchair with your mother’s brains!"

The ballroom descended into utter, absolute pandemonium.

Billionaires and socialites screamed, trampling each other as they scrambled toward the fire exits, diving beneath banquet tables and knocking over golden candelabras. Within three seconds, the central arena of the ballroom was cleared of all civilians, leaving only the tactical officers, the Vance family, Maya, and the two cornered Sterlings.

Commissioner O'Malley drew his weapon, but Richard tucked himself behind a marble pillar, using the angle to shield himself while keeping the gun trained squarely on the old woman.

"Drop your weapons, all of you!" Richard screamed, spittle flying from his lips. "Victoria, get up! Get behind me!"

Victoria, still on her knees, looked at her uncle in horror. "Uncle Richard... what are you doing? Put the gun down!"

"Shut up, you stupid girl!" Richard barked, never taking his eyes off Eleanor. "You ruined us with your arrogance! Now I’m saving what’s left of our lives! Vance! The phone! Call Zurich! Now, or she dies!"

Throughout it all, Alexander Vance did not move an inch. He didn't raise his hands. He didn't dive for cover. His pulse, visible at the side of his neck, remained steady, rhythmic, almost terrifyingly slow.

And Eleanor Vance?

The eighty-five-year-old woman didn't flinch. She looked at the black barrel of the revolver pointed at her chest, and a faint, sad smile touched her bleeding lips.

"Richard," Eleanor said, her voice impossibly calm in the face of death. "Do you remember the night you broke into my laboratory in 1991?"

Richard’s hand shook. "Shut up, old woman!"

"You were the one who held the gun that night, too," Eleanor continued softly. "William was a coward. He didn't have the stomach for murder. But you... you had that same desperate, rat-like look in your eyes."

"I told you to shut your mouth!" Richard shouted, his finger whitening on the trigger.

"You shot my husband in the back, Richard," Eleanor said, each word landing like a hammer on an anvil. "You made it look like a heart attack in the wreckage of that plane. But you forgot one simple rule of the Vance family."

Eleanor slowly lifted her right hand from her lap.

She wasn't holding a cane anymore.

During the commotion, her frail fingers had twisted the antique silver handle of her mahogany cane. With a soft, metallic *click*, the outer wooden sheath slid free, revealing twelve inches of surgical-grade folded Damascus steel—a hidden blade engraved with the ancient Latin motto of the Vance bloodline: *Mors Certa, Hora Incerta.* (Death is certain, its hour uncertain.)

"A Vance," Eleanor whispered, "never enters a den of wolves without an iron jaw."

Before Richard could process what he was seeing, Maya Cruz moved.

Maya didn't run toward Richard. She grabbed the edge of a heavy solid-silver dining tray from a nearby service cart, spun on her heel with the torque of an Olympic discus thrower, and hurled it across the room.

The silver tray cut through the air like a circular saw.

*CLANG!*

The edge of the tray struck Richard’s right wrist with bone-shattering force.

Richard howled in agony as the .38 revolver was knocked out of his grip, spinning across the floor. He stumbled backward, clutching his fractured wrist.

"Now," Alexander whispered.

Maya was already airborne.

She closed the thirty-foot gap in less than two seconds. Her combat boot slammed into Richard’s chest, driving the two-hundred-pound executive violently against the marble pillar. Before he could slide down, Maya caught him by the throat with her left hand, her right fist driving twice into his solar plexus with sickening, muffled thuds.

Richard’s eyes rolled back into his head as all the oxygen left his body. He collapsed onto the floor, gasping like a stranded fish, completely incapacitated.

Maya stood over him, her chest barely heaving, her eyes scanning the room for any further threats. Finding none, she turned back to Alexander and offered a crisp, flawless salute.

"Threat neutralized, Commander."
