Chapter 10 - The Projection Screen

"Elena, stop this right now!" Julian snarled, his mask slipping completely. He grabbed my shoulder, his fingers digging into the lace of my dress. "You’re hysterical. Somebody call the doctor!"

"Take your hands off my daughter before I have security put a bullet through your knee," Richard Vance’s voice cut through the air like a whip.

Two massive private security guards—men from my firm's executive protection detail—stepped out from behind the floral arches, their hands resting over the holsters beneath their blazers.

Julian froze. He slowly pulled his hand away, his chest heaving, his face turning an ugly shade of mottled red. "What the hell is this?"

"This is the wedding gift you deserved," I said.

I looked up toward the audio-visual booth at the back of the canopy.

"Marcus," I said clearly. "Play the slideshow."

Two massive eighty-inch high-definition LED screens, positioned on either side of the floral arch for the guests to view the ceremony, flared to life.

The crowd expected baby pictures. They expected romantic montages of trips to Paris and engagement parties.

Instead, the speakers filled with the unmistakable sound of an audio recording, crisp and clear:

*“She’s steady,”* Julian’s voice echoed over the garden, sounding loud enough to wake the dead. *“Reliable. Her family’s name holds weight in every boardroom from Raleigh to Charlotte. She doesn’t ask too many questions. She doesn’t make scenes. She’s safe.”*

Gasps exploded across the lawn.

Julian’s mother gasped, pressing both hands over her mouth. Several Charlotte bank presidents sat straight up in their chairs, exchange horrified glances.

Then, Claire’s voice came through the speakers:

*“You make it sound like a business deal.”*

*“In a way, it is. Why do you think I proposed when I did? Her father’s health is fading. The inheritance will go to her within months. Everything we need—funds, connections, social standing—will be ours. And she’ll never suspect. She’s too busy being grateful someone like me looked twice at someone like her.”*

Claire’s face drained of every drop of color. She dropped her peony bouquet into the dirt.

"Turn it off!" Claire shrieked, lunging toward the AV booth. "Turn that off right now! That’s private! That’s illegal wiretapping!"

She didn't make it three steps before one of my security guards stepped into her path, blocking her like a brick wall.

"North Carolina is a one-party consent state for audio recordings, Claire," Arthur Sterling’s gravelly voice announced from the front row. The old attorney stood up, adjusting his glasses. "And seeing as the recording device was situated in Elena’s own kitchen with her knowledge, it is entirely admissible in a court of law."

The screens didn't stop with the audio.

The image shifted to high-resolution scans of the forged Delaware LLC charter: **Aegis Horizon.**

Below it were the text messages from Claire’s phone, blown up six feet wide for every appellate judge and corporate CEO in North Carolina to read:

**Claire:** *Don’t choke at the altar, lover boy. Make sure you look like you’re crying tears of joy when she walks down. The photographers need to sell the grieving widow look next year.*

**Julian:** *I can play this idiot in my sleep. Just keep her calm until she says 'I do.' After that, she can cry all the way to the poorhouse.*

The garden erupted into absolute chaos.
