Chapter 5 - The Snake in Ivory

By 10:00 AM, the bridal suite on the second floor was a storm of hairspray, mimosa flutes, and expensive laughter.

"Elena, you are glowing!" Claire squealed, bustling into the room with an armful of steamed organza. She was wearing her matching bridesmaid robe, her hair already styled in loose, romantic waves. "The photographer is setting up the first-look shots on the terrace. Julian is down there looking like James Bond. Honestly, I think he’s more nervous than you are!"

I sat before the three-way vanity while the makeup artist blended a neutral shade across my lids.

"Is he?" I asked, watching Claire’s reflection. "Julian rarely gets nervous. He usually has everything under control."

"Well, he’s marrying you," Claire said smoothly, picking up a bottle of champagne from the silver ice bucket. She popped the cork with a cheerful *thump* and poured two glasses. "To the Vance family legacy. Bigger and better than ever."

She handed me a flute.

I took it, held it up to the light, watching the tiny bubbles race to the top. "To family, Claire. And getting exactly what we deserve."

Claire took a healthy sip, her eyes crinkling. "Always."

"By the way," I said casually, letting the makeup artist line my lips. "Julian mentioned he was taking care of the final filing fees with Arthur this morning. Did you get that corporate charter finalized for your new design expansion?"

Claire’s champagne glass paused a fraction of an inch from her lips. "My charter? Oh... yeah. Just some boring paperwork. Why do you ask?"

"Just wondering if you used Delaware or North Carolina. Julian always swears Delaware is better for shielding assets from creditors."

Claire laughed, a little too loud, a little too bright. "You know me, El! I don't know anything about taxes or corporate shelters. I just pick out the wallpaper and let the accountants handle the boring stuff."

"Right," I smiled. "Just like me. Dumb girls who let the men handle the math."

Claire chuckled, though her fingers tightened around the stem of her glass until her knuckles went pale. "Elena, you’re a CEO. Nobody thinks you’re dumb."

"Julian does," I said softly.

The room suddenly felt fifty degrees colder. The makeup artist paused, her brush hovering in mid-air.

Claire forced a nervous giggle. "What? That’s crazy. He worships the ground you walk on."

"He told me last night that I was safe," I said, turning in my chair to face her fully. I kept my expression completely open, innocent, almost wistful. "He said I was steady. Like a municipal bond. Isn't that the most romantic thing you’ve ever heard?"

Claire swallowed hard. Her throat bobbed. "He... he was just being practical, El. Men express love differently."

Before I could reply, the door swung open and Evelyn Thorne swept in, followed by two junior bridesmaids carrying the wedding dress. The dress was a custom Oscar de la Renta—a masterpiece of Chantilly lace, long sleeves, and a six-foot train that looked like spun moonlight.

"Look at this perfection!" Evelyn cried, clasping her hands over her pearls. "My son is the luckiest man in the world!"

"Yes, he is," I said, standing up from the vanity.

While Claire was busy helping Evelyn untangle the garment bag, I stepped over to Claire’s vanity station where her designer leather tote sat unzipped.

I reached in with two fingers, slid out her personal phone, and slipped it into the deep silk pocket of my robe.

I already had her passcode. It was the same six digits she had used since high school—Julian’s birthday.

I locked myself in the adjoining dressing closet, unlocked the phone, and tapped the messaging app.

The most recent thread was labeled with an alias: **J.T. - Project Horizon.**

I opened it.

**Julian (9:14 AM):** *The Miami reps are arriving at 3:00 PM. They’re sitting in the back row. Once the minister pronounces us and the clerk signs the registry, the power of attorney activates the transfer. Have the Aegis wire coordinates ready.*

**Claire (9:18 AM):** *Already loaded on the laptop. Don’t choke at the altar, lover boy. Make sure you look like you’re crying tears of joy when she walks down. The photographers need to sell the grieving widow look next year.*

**Julian (9:20 AM):** *I can play this idiot in my sleep. Just keep her calm until she says 'I do.' After that, she can cry all the way to the poorhouse.*

I held my personal phone over Claire's screen, snapping crisp, high-resolution photographs of every single text, timestamp, and attached bank routing number.

Then I closed her phone, stepped back into the suite, and dropped it back into her purse without a sound.

"Elena, darling!" Claire called out from across the room. "Are you ready to put on the dress?"

"Almost," I said, my voice sweet as honey and sharp as razor wire. "Make sure the audio technician down by the altar has the thumb drive for the slideshow. I added a few personal photos to the pre-ceremony montage."

"Of course," Claire smiled, oblivious. "I’ll make sure it plays on the big projection screens."

May you like

"Thank you, Claire," I said. "You’ve always been so good at showing everyone who you really are."
