Chapter 13 - The True Reception

The police cruisers drove away, their sirens blaring down the long, wooded drive, cutting through the autumn air like a final curtain.

The garden was dead silent.

Two hundred and fifty guests stood frozen, unsure whether to offer condolences, run for the parking lot, or start whispering to the nearest reporter.

Reverend Campbell stood behind the altar, his Bible trembling in his hands, looking at me with wide, panicked eyes. "Miss Vance... I... the ceremony... what should I do?"

I turned toward the audience.

I picked up the microphone, smoothed down the front of my pristine Oscar de la Renta gown, and looked at the crowd of Carolina royalty.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I said, my voice ringing out warm, steady, and perfectly poised. "I apologize for the change in programming. But as my father always says: a Vance never cancels an event."

A few hesitant chuckles broke out in the third row.

"There will be no wedding today," I continued, a genuine smile finally touching my lips. "However, there are forty pounds of fresh Maine lobster, three hundred dry-aged fillets, and twelve cases of 2008 Dom Pérignon waiting in the reception pavilion. And today, we are celebrating something far more important than a marriage."

I reached down and took my father’s hand, pulling him gently to his feet.

"Today, we celebrate the Vance family. We celebrate justice. And we celebrate the fact that the garbage took itself out before dinner."

The crowd erupted.

Senator Higgins was the first to stand and applaud. Within three seconds, all two hundred and fifty guests were on their feet, clapping, cheering, and raising their glasses in a standing ovation that echoed all the way to the pine ridges.

My father looked at me, his eyes shining with unspilled tears, his chest swelling with pride.

"You did good, Ellie," he whispered, kissing my forehead. "You did damn good."

"Come on, Dad," I smiled, slipping my arm through his. "Let’s go eat fifty thousand dollars worth of catering."
