Chapter 12 - The Seeds of the Trap

The room in the central district municipal courthouse was windowless, illuminated by humming fluorescent tubes that turned everyone’s skin the color of parchment. Daniel sat across from his attorney, Marcus Webb, an iron-haired litigator who had represented his family business for over a decade. Marcus had two files open in front of him, neither of which contained good news.

"They didn't start this yesterday, Daniel," Marcus said, tapping a red pen against a date on the top document. "Look at the filing date on the initial psychiatric baseline evaluation. Eight months ago. That’s three weeks after you and Vanessa announced your engagement."

Daniel stared at the paper. His vision blurred around the edges. "Noah never saw a psychiatrist. I never signed a consent form."

"You didn't have to," Marcus said grimly. "Look at the co-signature. Vanessa took him to a pediatric behavioral specialist affiliated with her father’s private healthcare syndicate. She claimed Noah was experiencing night terrors, unprovoked violent outbursts, and unexplained bruising. She presented herself as his prospective stepmother acting in loco parentis while you were out of town on business."

Daniel’s mind spun backward, replaying the months leading up to the disaster at the altar. He remembered a week in late October when he had flown to Seattle to close a major commercial logistics contract. Vanessa had insisted—practically pleaded—that he leave Noah in her care instead of hiring his regular babysitter. She had sent him staged photographs every evening: Noah eating organic berries, Noah asleep under a cashmere blanket, Noah smiling beside a stack of picture books.

*‘He misses you, darling,’* her texts had read. *‘He gets so frightened when he thinks about the dark. But don't worry, I have everything under control.’*

"She was building a paper trail," Daniel whispered, the realization hitting him like a blow to the ribs. "Every bruise from soccer practice. Every scraped knee from the playground. She documented them."

"Not just documented," Marcus said, sliding an affidavit across the table. "Fabricated clinical interpretations. Dr. Paul Vance—the cousin your late wife never trusted—signed off on psychological assessments diagnosing Noah with reactive detachment disorder caused by paternal neglect. Vanessa wasn’t just preparing to marry you. She was preparing a cage."

Daniel leaned his elbows on the table, burying his face in his hands. The scent of sterile office paper made him nauseous. "Why would she do that? Even if she hated me, why build a legal dossier to claim custody of another woman’s child?"

Marcus flipped to the final page of the thick folder. "Because your late wife, Claire, was much smarter than Vanessa gave her credit for. But Vanessa discovered something Claire hid away—something that only becomes accessible under very specific legal conditions."
