Chapter 18 - The Digital Confession

At 8:00 PM, Marcus Webb met Daniel at a twenty-four-hour digital forensics lab on the outskirts of the city. On the glass table between them lay a flash drive Paul Vance had retrieved from his private home safe—shaking so violently while handing it over that he had dropped his keys twice.

The technician plugged the drive into a workstation. Two monitors flickered to life, displaying a directory containing sixteen audio files and a series of encrypted email threads.

"Play the file dated November 14th," Marcus instructed.

The technician clicked the icon. The speakers hummed briefly with static before Vanessa’s crisp, melodic voice filled the room—cold, detached, and chillingly calculated.

*"Paul, you need to sharpen the language in paragraph three,"* Vanessa’s voice said, sounding as if she were ordering coffee at a drive-thru. *"The word 'withdrawn' isn't strong enough. Use 'severe dissociative response to paternal neglect.' The family court magistrate we're assigning this to responds strongly to clinical trauma buzzwords. Make sure you note that Daniel refused to attend the follow-up sessions. We need him completely discredited before the wedding date. If he suspects the trust terms before we get the marriage certificate stamped, Arthur says the entire bridge loan falls through."*

Then, a second voice—Paul Vance’s—hesitant and trembling: *"Vanessa, the boy doesn't show clinical dissociation. He's just quiet. He cried for his father the entire time you were in the lobby."*

*"I don't pay you to interpret his feelings, Paul,"* Vanessa’s sharp retort was instant. *"I pay you to sign the affidavits. If Noah has to look terrified for thirty minutes to secure twelve million dollars, he'll survive. Kids are resilient. He’ll get over it once we park him in a boarding school in Switzerland."*

The technician paused the track. A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the lab.

Marcus looked up, his jaw set like concrete. "This isn't just fraud, Daniel. This is conspiracy to commit custodial interference, witness tampering, and grand larceny under state trust regulations."

"Is it enough to stop the hearing tomorrow?" Daniel asked, his eyes burning with exhaustion.

May you like

"It’s enough to send Vanessa Sterling and her father to a federal penitentiary," Marcus answered grimly. "We don't just stop the hearing tomorrow. We end them."
