Chapter 15 - The Real Architect

The corporate headquarters of Sterling Holdings occupied the top four floors of a glass tower overlooking the harbor. Daniel bypassed the security desk on the ground floor with an old executive visitor pass that had somehow escaped deactivation. When the elevator doors opened onto the forty-second floor, the smell of polished mahogany and expensive floral arrangements hit him like an insult.
Arthur Sterling sat behind an expansive walnut desk that looked like an aircraft carrier. Across from him sat Vanessa, dressed in immaculate white wool, sipping green tea from an eggshell-thin porcelain cup.
Neither of them jumped when Daniel kicked open the frosted glass door.
"You're trespassing, Daniel," Arthur said without looking up from his tablet. His silver hair was brushed back with pomade, his expression as impassive as granite. "Security will have you removed in two minutes."
"Call them," Daniel said, walking steadily until his palms hit the polished surface of the desk with an explosive slap. Tea splashed over the rim of Vanessa’s cup, staining her white sleeve.
She flinched, snapping her head toward him with eyes full of venom. "You barbarian. You can’t even conduct yourself like a human being. Just wait until the family court judge sees how you behave when you’re cornered."
"You used my son," Daniel said, leaning forward until his face was inches from Arthur’s. "You had Paul Vance drug him with mild sedatives to mimic behavioral regression. You had him evaluated under a false name."
Arthur set down his stylus and met Daniel’s gaze with icy amusement. "Can you prove it? Paul Vance is an accredited physician with thirty years on staff at St. Jude’s. You are a contractor with a ruined marriage and a boy who screams when a shadow moves across the floor. In family court, paper wins. Credibility wins. Blood doesn't mean a damn thing when the financial ledger says you're an unstable guardian."
"This isn't about guardianship," Daniel hissed. "It's about Claire’s trust. You’re broke, Arthur. Your maritime properties are leveraged three times over. You needed my signature or an unfitness ruling to tap that collateral."
Vanessa sneered, tossing her napkin onto the desk. "Claire was a stupid, paranoid heiress who didn't know what to do with wealth. She left that fortune sitting in an index fund while you played handyman in a suburban wasteland! That money belongs in our portfolio. If I had to endure your pathetic, crying kid for eight months to secure the signature, I earned every cent of it."
"She didn't leave it to you," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "And she didn't leave it unprotected."

Arthur gestured toward the door as two burly building guards appeared in the hallway. "Get him out of here. And Daniel? Tomorrow morning at nine, Noah will be placed in state foster care pending our emergency guardianship petition. Say goodbye to him tonight."
