Chapter 20 - The Unfinished Ghost

The gavel fell three times, each strike sounding like a death sentence for the Sterling dynasty.

"Petition denied with prejudice," Judge Morales declared, her voice ringing across the courtroom. "The court finds probable cause of aggravated fraud, attempted custodial interference, and criminal conspiracy. Bailiffs, take Ms. Vanessa Sterling into custody pending formal indictment by the grand jury. Mr. Sterling, you are ordered to surrender your passport immediately."

Chaos erupted. Cameras flashed from the press gallery as reporters rushed the aisle. Vanessa shrieked as female bailiffs secured her wrists behind her back, her perfect composure collapsing into hysterical screams as she was led through the side prisoner exit. Arthur Sterling remained frozen in his chair, staring blankly ahead as federal agents in windbreakers approached the defense table to serve asset freeze orders.

Daniel didn't stay to watch the spectacle. He walked out of the courtroom, out of the marble corridors, and stepped into the clean, cold autumn rain.

Two hours later, Daniel was back at the house. Noah was sitting at the kitchen table, drawing a picture of a house with green grass and two tall figures holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun.

"Dad?" Noah looked up, his big brown eyes searching his father’s face.

"It’s over, Noah," Daniel said softly, pulling a chair beside him and ruffling his hair. "No more doctors with shiny sticks. No more bad houses. Just you, me, and our home."

Noah gave a small, bright smile, picking up a blue crayon to color the sky. "Are we safe now?"

"We are safe."

Daniel’s phone vibrated in his jacket pocket. He pulled it out, expecting a message from Marcus regarding the press conference.

Instead, the screen displayed an encrypted message from an unknown number. It contained a single, low-resolution photograph of an old highway accident report dated four years ago—the night Claire had died in a single-vehicle rollover on Route 9.

Beneath the photograph, a line of text blinked on the glass screen:

*‘The trust wasn’t the only thing Arthur Sterling tried to control. Look at the passenger seat log from the crash report, Daniel. Claire wasn’t alone in that car—and the woman who walked away wasn’t Vanessa.’*

Daniel stopped breathing. He stared at the screen as the storm outside rattled the kitchen windows, the silence shattering all over again.
