Chapter 2 - The DNA TestMargaret lunged for the report.
“Give me that!”
James stepped backward.
“No.”
He called the laboratory printed on the document.
The receptionist confirmed the results.
Margaret Hale was listed as Lily's biological mother.
James looked at his mother as though she were a stranger.
“How?”
Margaret tried to laugh.
“It's a laboratory mistake.”
But the report contained a file number, identification information, and confirmation in the laboratory system.
There was no mistake.
I held Lily against my chest.
She was crying quietly.
“Mommy,” she whispered, “am I not yours?”
My heart shattered.
I kissed her hair.
“You are mine. Nothing will ever change that.”
Richard, James's father, arrived moments later.
When he heard the truth, his face hardened.
“Margaret,” he said. “Explain.”
She couldn't.
Then Richard struck her.
“Family?” he shouted. “You call this family?”
Margaret stared at all of us.
For the first time, she looked frightened.
Then her expression changed.
The fear disappeared.
Something colder took its place.
“You'll all regret this.”
She walked away.

But I knew the night wasn't over.
It had only begun.
