Chapter 10 - Where the Waves Break Clean

Three months later.
The morning sun rose over the Atlantic, painting the surface of the ocean in shades of molten gold and rose quartz. The storm was long gone, replaced by a crystalline autumn breeze that carried the scent of pine and salt.
Mercer Manor was gone.
Daniel had ordered the mansion demolished two weeks after Valerie's arrest. The stone, the marble, the balconies—all of it had been bulldozed into rubble and cleared away. In its place, the Mercer Foundation was constructing a twenty-acre coastal pediatric rehabilitation sanctuary, funded by the liquidated assets of Valerie Rostova and the dismantled Ares shell corporations.
Valerie Rostova was currently sitting in a federal supermax facility in Florence, Colorado, awaiting trial on charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, maritime terrorism, and corporate treason. The evidence on Claire’s micro-drive had triggered federal indictments against forty-two executives across the globe, dismantling the Ares network root and branch. Coroner Samuel Vance had hanged himself in his jail cell three days after his arrest.
Daniel sat on a weathered wooden bench near the base of the lighthouse. He was dressed in a simple wool sweater and jeans. The hollow, haunted look in his eyes had begun to recede, replaced by a quiet, enduring strength.
Beside him, Lily was running across the grass.
Her cheeks were rosy with health, her laughter ringing out across the bluffs like music. Her lungs had fully healed, the doctors at St. Jude's calling her recovery nothing short of a miracle. She wore a bright yellow jacket, chasing a golden retriever puppy Marcus Vance had given her for her late birthday.
"Daddy! Look! A butterfly!" Lily shouted, pointing her tiny finger toward a monarch dancing on the sea breeze.
"I see it, sweetheart!" Daniel called back, his heart swelling with an emotion so immense it nearly brought him to his knees.
Lily ran back to the bench, breathless and smiling, and clambered onto Daniel’s lap. She wrapped her little arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder.
Around Lily’s neck hung the silver star.
The micro-drive had been removed by federal forensics, but Daniel had polished the platinum alloy until it shone like a mirror.
"Daddy?" Lily whispered, looking up at him with Claire’s deep, radiant brown eyes.
"Yes, baby?"
"Is Mommy watching the butterfly too?"
Daniel looked out across the vast, open ocean. For the first time in two years, the water didn't look like a grave. It didn't look cold, cruel, or treacherous. It looked like Claire—vast, beautiful, and completely free.
He pressed a kiss to his daughter’s forehead, wrapping his arms around her tightly, feeling every strong, steady beat of her little heart.

"Mommy sees it, Lily bug," Daniel whispered, tears of profound peace finally slipping down his cheeks. "Mommy sees everything. And she knows you're safe now."
Lily smiled, clutching the silver star with her small fingers, and turned back to watch the light dance across the clean, unbroken sea.
