Chapter 8 - The Ghost Drive Unleashed

Pier 42 was a monument to industrial decay. Rusted container cranes loomed against the storm clouds like skeletal giants, and rows of corrugated shipping containers formed narrow, wind-swept canyons slick with black rainwater.

Daniel killed the truck’s headlights half a mile out, coasting silently into the shadows beside an abandoned rail spur. He racked the slide of the Glock, slipped out into the freezing downpour, and moved like a shadow through the maze of steel containers.

Up ahead, inside an open warehouse bay illuminated by yellow sodium floodlights, stood a silver Mercedes-Benz van.

Grant Cole was pacing beside the hood, holding a ruggedized military laptop. Claire’s silver star pendant lay on the hood beside him, its casing cracked open, revealing a micro-circuit board the size of a fingernail.

A second man—tall, wearing a Kevlar tactical vest and a high-frequency communications headset—was monitoring an encrypted satellite link.

"Uplink is at sixty percent," the comms tech said, his voice carrying over the rain. "As soon as the cryptographic key decrypts Claire Mercer's ledger, the offshore assets will begin rerouting to the Zurich escrow. Rostova wants the drive wiped the second the transfer verifies."

"Tell Rostova she owes me an extra two million for this," Grant snarled, checking his watch. "The kid was supposed to be a clean drop. Mercer jumped in. If he’s still breathing, this whole operation blows wide open."

"Mercer is being handled at the hospital," the comms tech said coldly. "He won't make it to sunrise."

"He won't have to," a voice echoed from the darkness.

Grant spun around, reaching for his sidearm.

*Pfft. Pfft.*

Daniel fired from the shadow of a shipping container. Two rounds took the comms tech through the throat and chest. The technician collapsed against the laptop, his blood splattering the screen.

Grant shrieked in terror, diving behind the Mercedes as Daniel advanced.

"Daniel! Wait!" Grant screamed from behind the engine block. "You don't understand what’s going on! I was hired! It was just a contract!"

Daniel didn't speak. He moved with cold, mechanical efficiency, rounding the corner of the vehicle.

Grant lunged outward, firing a snub-nosed revolver wildly into the dark. One bullet grazed Daniel’s shoulder, tearing through his jacket and scorching the skin, but Daniel didn't even flinch. He stepped inside Grant's guard, swept the weapon from Grant's hand, and drove his knee into the man's ribs with bone-crushing force.

Grant hit the concrete, gasping for air, clutching his shattered side.

Daniel picked up Claire's silver star from the hood of the van. The platinum alloy was scratched, but the micro-drive was intact.

Beside it, the laptop screen flashed green:

**DECRYPTION COMPLETE. AUDIO/VIDEO LOGS RESTORED.**

A video window automatically expanded on the screen.

Daniel looked down, his breath catching in his throat.

The video was timestamped two years ago—the night Claire died. It was recorded from Claire’s private dashcam, mounted inside her Range Rover parked near the lighthouse.

In the grainy, infrared footage, Claire was standing near the edge of the cliff, arguing furiously with Vanessa. Vanessa was dressed in an identical yellow raincoat to Claire's. Grant Cole was standing twenty feet back, blocking Claire's path to the vehicle.

*“You think Daniel won't find out?”* Claire’s voice screamed through the laptop speakers, cutting through the sound of the rain. *“He knows the shipping manifests don't match! He will tear you apart, Valerie!”*

*“Daniel is a romantic, Claire,”* Vanessa’s recorded voice replied, laughing softly. *“He sees what he wants to see. And once you're gone, he’ll see me.”*

On the screen, Grant lunged forward, grabbing Claire from behind. Claire fought violently, screaming Daniel’s name, but Vanessa stepped forward with a blunt steel wrench. She struck Claire across the temple.

Claire went limp.

Together, Vanessa and Grant dragged Claire’s lifeless body to the edge of the rocks and shoved her into the churning darkness of the Atlantic below.

Daniel stood completely still. The rain poured down his face, mingling with the tears he could no longer hold back.

It was all there.

Unquestionable. Undeniable. High-definition video proof of Claire’s murder, recorded in her final moments, stored inside the star she had hidden on their daughter's backpack.

Grant looked up from the floor, trembling, seeing the laptop screen. "Daniel... please... she forced me... she has dirt on my family..."

Daniel turned his gaze down to Grant. The rage inside him had vanished, replaced by an emptiness so profound it was terrifying.

"Where is she, Grant?" Daniel asked.

Grant swallowed hard, looking into the eyes of a man who had already died once tonight. "She’s... she’s at the private airfield in Bedford. Ares’ corporate jet is fueling. She’s leaving the country at three in the morning."

Daniel looked at his watch.
