Chapter 7 - The Guilt of a Blind Father

Twenty minutes later, Lily was secured in the back of Marcus Vance’s unmarked, up-armored Chevrolet Suburban, escorted by two former Navy SEAL medics equipped with battlefield life-support gear. They were heading south toward an off-grid medical facility operated by Marcus’s private firm in Rhode Island—a facility with no public records, no network connections, and twenty-four-hour perimeter security.

Daniel sat in the front passenger seat of a second vehicle—a black matte Dodge Ram—speeding north along Interstate 93 toward Boston.

Rain had begun to fall, drumming against the windshield like a drumbeat of war.

Daniel stared at his hands. They were stained with salt, dried sea kelp, and the blood of the hitman from the hospital. But the heaviest stain was invisible.

It was the guilt.

How could he have been so stupid? How could a man who had led men in combat, who had built a global enterprise, be so utterly blind to the monster sharing his bed?

He remembered the way Vanessa had held Lily on her lap during Christmas, smiling warmly as Lily unwrapped presents. He remembered Vanessa brushing Lily’s hair, gently braiding it while humming old French lullabies.

It had all been theater. Every smile had been an assessment of how easy it would be to snap the child's neck. Every affectionate touch had been a calculated performance to ensure Daniel never suspected the poison she was preparing to feed his family.

*Claire knew.*

Claire had tried to warn him. Three weeks before her death, Claire had sat him down in his study, her eyes wide with fear, holding a ledger of offshore shell transfers. She had said, *Daniel, there are people inside the company who don't want cargo ships—they want smuggling channels. They are using our flags to move blood money.*

And what had Daniel done?

He had kissed her forehead, taken the ledger, and said, *Let the auditors handle it, sweetheart. You're stressing yourself out. Focus on your painting. Focus on Lily.*

He had dismissed his brilliant, sharp-witted wife as hysterical. He had trusted the system, trusted his board, trusted the illusion of safety his wealth had bought him. And because of his arrogant complacency, Claire had been thrown from the rocks.

And then, like the world's most pathetic fool, he had invited her murderer into their home, placed her in Claire's bed, and handed her Claire’s child to murder.

"Daniel." Marcus’s voice broke through the cabin speakers from the dashboard console. "You're spiraling. I can hear your breathing. Pull it together."

"She’s four years old, Marcus," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with a ferocious, suppressed agony. "Lily is four years old. She looked at me through that oxygen mask and told me Vanessa smiled. She smiled when she dropped her."

"Which is why you cannot afford to lose your head right now," Marcus replied, his voice hard as iron. "Vanessa isn't just a corporate climber, Daniel. We just decrypted her true dossier. Her real name is Valerie Rostova. She was trained by an offshoot of the old Soviet foreign intelligence apparatus before selling her services to private equity cartels. She has dissolved four other corporate dynasties in Europe over the last decade. She targets wealthy widowers, consolidates their assets, liquidates their heirs through untraceable accidents, and hands the shell corporations over to Ares."

Daniel tightened his grip on the steering wheel until the leather groaned. "She’s not liquidating this one."

"Grant Cole is already at Pier 42," Marcus continued. "Our drone spotted his vehicle entering the main terminal. But Daniel—there's an Ares tactical squad on site. They have automatic weapons and night-vision capabilities. You cannot go in there alone."

Daniel checked the magazine of the suppressed Glock he had taken from the hitman. Fifteen rounds. He grabbed two spare magazines from the glove box—provisions Marcus had staged in the vehicle.

"I’m not waiting for backup, Marcus," Daniel said. "If Grant transfers that drive to their satellite uplink, Claire's proof is deleted forever, and Samuel Vance’s warrants will stick. Vanessa wins."

"Daniel, it's a kill-box!"

"Then they better bring enough body bags," Daniel said, and slammed his foot on the accelerator.
