Chapter 5 - The Snake in Silk and Kevlar

"Clear!"
Daniel’s world narrowed to the dull *thud* of the electrical shock passing through his daughter’s chest. Lily’s tiny frame arched off the examination table.
"Still no pulse! Resume compressions! One, two, three, four..."
Daniel smashed his fist against the reinforced glass. The impact sent a spiderweb fracture through the outer laminate layer. "Don't you dare die, Lily! Fight! Hear me, Lily, FIGHT!"
"Daniel, you have to let them work!" Owen grabbed Daniel’s shoulders, trying to pull him back, but Daniel was immovable, a pillar of iron and fury.
Inside the bay, the doctor injected epinephrine directly into the central line. Compressions continued. The rhythm of the doctor’s hands was frantic, rhythmic, desperate. Ten seconds. Twenty seconds. Thirty seconds.
*Beep... beep... beep...*
"Sinus rhythm restored! We have a pulse! Ninety beats per minute and climbing!"
Daniel dropped his forehead against the cracked glass, sinking slowly to his knees. A ragged, broken sob escaped his throat. She was alive. Barely hanging by a spider’s silk, but her heart was beating.
Before he could breathe, his satellite phone vibrated. An unknown number flashed on the encrypted screen.
Daniel stood up, wiping the cold sweat from his face, and answered. "Speak."
"You always were an exceptionally strong swimmer, Daniel," Vanessa’s voice purred through the speaker. It was silky, cool, and completely devoid of the terrified, tearful tone she had used on the terrace hours before. "It really is a tragedy. If you had stayed in the water, the hypothermia would have killed you painlessly. Now, it’s going to be so much more complicated."
Daniel’s voice was a low, volcanic rumble. "I am going to hunt you to the ends of the earth, Vanessa. I am going to peel your life apart until nothing remains, and then I will watch you rot in a federal cage."
Vanessa laughed. The sound was melodic, chilling, and utterly devoid of humanity.
"A cage? Oh, Daniel, my darling, naive Daniel. Who do you think runs the cages? Samuel Vance has already issued the arrest warrant. Not for me. For *you*."
Daniel froze. "What?"
"The narrative has evolved," she said smoothly. "Witnesses saw you screaming at Lily on the terrace earlier tonight. Several guests will testify under oath that you were drinking heavily and ranting about Claire. When the balustrade gave way, it wasn't an accident—you threw her, Daniel. In a psychotic, grief-induced fit, you threw your own child into the ocean. And when you realized what you had done, you jumped in to cover your crime. Dr. Owen Price is currently listed as an accomplice who helped you flee the crime scene."
"No one will believe that," Daniel snarled. "The physical evidence—"
"The physical evidence is already being scrubbed, Daniel," she interrupted, her voice turning sharp as a razor. "The terrace stone has been cleared by my private security team. The forensic logs are rewritten. And in forty minutes, Lily will experience a sudden, unpreventable pulmonary arrest in that pediatric ward. A tragic consequence of her father's monstrous violence."
Daniel’s blood turned to ice. He looked through the glass at the medical staff, then out into the hospital corridor.
"You have people inside St. Jude’s," Daniel whispered.
"I have people everywhere, Daniel. You built a shipping empire, but you never understood the world you were operating in. You thought integrity was a shield. It isn't. It's an invitation to be slaughtered. Say goodbye to your daughter, Daniel. When she dies, the trust dissolves, the merger closes, and you will spend the rest of your miserable life in a maximum-security psychiatric facility."
The line went dead.
Daniel shoved the phone into his pocket and turned slowly toward Owen Price.
Owen was backing away, his face paper-white, his hands raised in front of him. "Daniel... Daniel, listen to me..."
Daniel crossed the distance between them in half a second, his left hand locking around Owen’s throat, lifting the doctor six inches off the floor and slamming him against the cinderblock corridor wall.

"Who is in this building, Owen?" Daniel whispered, his voice shaking with murder. "Tell me right now, or I will crush your windpipe."
