Chapter 1 - THE TWO WORDS THAT KILLED THE LAUGHTERThe first Marine stopped laughing before Corporal Mason Reed understood there was anything wrong.

One second, twelve men crowded around the scarred oak tables of the recreation bar, trading deployment stories beneath neon beer signs and the faded shadow of an American flag.
The next, the room went unnaturally still.
Mason remained standing across from the woman he had spent the better part of twenty minutes mocking.
She looked ordinary.
Mid-forties.
Dark charcoal jacket.
Jeans.
Plain boots.
No ribbons.
No rank.
No uniform.
Nothing about her suggested she belonged among men who measured pieces of their lives in deployments and scars.
That was exactly why Mason had chosen her.
“You're serious?” he asked.
The woman calmly wrapped both hands around her club soda.
“Iron Ten.”
Sergeant Daniel Cole froze near the bar.
His bottle stopped halfway to his mouth.
The color disappeared from his face.
Mason noticed.
“So what?” Mason laughed. “Is that supposed to mean something?”
Daniel turned.
“Reed.”
There was something in his voice Mason had never heard before.
Fear.
“Shut your mouth.”
Mason's smile faded.
Across the table, Claire Mercer reached for her drink.
Her jacket shifted.
A cream-colored envelope appeared briefly inside it.
Daniel saw the emblem.
A black circle.
Ten narrow bars.
An iron bridge beneath them.
His chair scraped violently backward.
He stood.
Mason stared at him.
“Why are you standing?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Claire looked up.
“Sit down, Sergeant.”
Daniel obeyed.
That frightened Mason more than anything else.
His brother had served nearly two decades.
He didn't obey civilians.
Yet Daniel sat as though the woman had spoken with authority older than rank.
Mason whispered, “Who the hell are you?”
Claire's eyes settled on him.
For the first time, he noticed something he had missed.
They weren't cold.
They were tired.
The eyes of someone who had seen terrible things and survived long enough to stop explaining them.
“My name is Claire Mercer.”
Daniel's breathing stopped.
“Mercer?”
She nodded.
Daniel whispered the name like he had just discovered a ghost sitting across from him.
“Iron Ten.”
Claire reached inside her jacket.
She removed the envelope.
Then placed it on the table.
Daniel stared at it.
“What is that?”
Claire slid it toward him.
“The truth about the night you were supposed to die.”
And somewhere beyond the rain-streaked windows, a man in a gray jacket lifted his phone.
He photographed the three of them.

Then sent a message containing four words.
IRON TEN HAS RETURNED.
