Chapter 18 - THE GENERAL WHO SIGNED NOTHINGGeneral Warren Hale had attended Thomas Vale's funeral.

He had comforted Claire.

Defended Iron Team during classified hearings.

And years later helped Claire disappear quietly into civilian life.

He had been her mentor.

The man who taught her command.

The man who told her that leadership meant carrying decisions others couldn't.

According to Everett's evidence, Hale had also approved the network that Voss protected.

Claire felt betrayed all over again.

But this time she refused to repeat the past.

No assumptions.

No immediate accusations.

She confronted Hale privately.

He was eighty-one.

Terminally ill.

Living in Virginia.

When Claire placed Everett's photograph on the table, Hale didn't deny knowing.

Instead, he laughed sadly.

“You finally got here.”

Claire's anger faltered.

Hale explained.

He hadn't created the network.

He had infiltrated it.

For twenty-two years.

Voss never knew.

Everett eventually discovered Hale's role.

That was why he created Ironfall II.

Not to expose Hale.

To protect the evidence Hale had collected.

Claire stared at him.

“Then who's above Voss?”

Hale looked toward the window.

“A structure doesn't need a king to survive.”

Contractors.

Officials.

Lobbyists.

Foreign intermediaries.

Different generations replacing one another.

The conspiracy wasn't one organization.

It was an ecosystem.

Voss's arrest damaged it.

It didn't destroy it.

Hale handed Claire a final drive.

“Everett believed you could finish this.”

Claire shook her head.

“I spent fourteen years trying to stop being Iron Ten.”

May you like

Hale smiled.

“That's precisely why he trusted you.”
