Chapter 10 - The Midnight Confession

By 9:00 PM that evening, the Edina house was shrouded in fog.

I sat at the kitchen island, a cup of Earl Grey tea cooling in my hands, listening to the grandfather clock tick away the seconds. The house was empty, but for the first time in thirteen years, it didn't feel haunted. The ghosts had finally been identified.

A sharp rap sounded at the back French doors.

I didn't jump. I set my cup down, walked over to the glass, and flicked on the patio floodlights.

Garrett Hughes stood on my deck in the pouring rain. His tie was undone, his expensive wool coat soaked through, his eyes bloodshot and wild. He held a thick cardboard banker's box under one arm.

I unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open six inches, keeping the security chain engaged.

"What do you want, Garrett?"

"Let me in, Clara. Please," he begged, his teeth chattering from the cold. "The feds raided my townhome two hours ago. They've seized my laptops. My accounts are frozen. If you don't take these files, they'll destroy them."

"Why would the feds destroy your files, Garrett?" I asked calmly. "The Department of Justice loves evidence."

"Because it’s not just Vance Logistics!" Garrett choked out, leaning against the doorframe, his breath smelling of stale whiskey. "Richard was washing money for Senator Vane’s reelection campaign through our third-party transport contracts. Donald Sterling set up the dummy shell companies. Elena wasn't just Richard's mistress—she was Vane's former campaign treasurer! That's how Richard met her!"

The missing puzzle piece clicked into place with terrifying clarity.

Thirteen years ago, Richard hadn't just tripped into a casual affair with a receptionist. He had been introduced to Elena Rossi to facilitate an illegal pipeline of corporate money into state political campaigns. The relationship had turned sexual, the boy had been born, and Richard—blinded by his desperate, narcissistic desire to have an heir—had believed the child was his miraculous redemption.

And Garrett, the pathetic, cowardly CFO, had been sleeping with Elena the entire time, terrified that if Richard ever found out the boy was his, Richard would expose the political money laundering and send Garrett to federal prison for twenty years.

"Take the chain off, Clara," Garrett pleaded, tears welling in his eyes. "I’ll give you the master ledgers. The ones with Richard’s personal signatures, Donald Sterling's offshore routing numbers, all of it. Just give me immunity. Tell your lawyers to back off on the civil suit."

I looked down at the banker's box in his arms.

"Step back, Garrett," I said.

He stepped back. I unlatched the chain and pulled the door wide open.

Garrett stumbled into the warm kitchen, dropping the heavy box onto the island counter. He collapsed onto a barstool, burying his face in his trembling hands, sobbing openly.

"I didn't want this," he wept. "I loved Elena. Back in college, before Richard ever looked at her. When she got pregnant... she told me Richard had millions. She said Richard would pay for everything—our kid's future, our houses, everything—and all we had to do was keep quiet and play the game."

"And you let another man raise your son as his trophy," I said, my voice cold, devoid of sympathy.

"He gave Julian a life I couldn't afford!" Garrett yelled, lifting his head. "Look around this house, Clara! Look at the life you had! Richard was a monster, but he was a rich monster! Now Julian is gone! He ran away from the church and nobody can find him!"

My chest tightened.

"What did you say?" I demanded, gripping the edge of the island. "Where is Julian?"
