Chapter 14 - The Cell Block Visit

The Ramsey County Adult Detention Center was an ugly, concrete slab located on the edge of downtown Saint Paul. The visiting room smelled of industrial floor stripper and misery.

Elena sat on the other side of the thick acrylic partition, separated from me by steel bolts and heavy mesh wire.

She wasn't wearing her cashmere coat or pearl earrings anymore. She wore a dull orange jumpsuit three sizes too large, her hair pulled back into a messy, greasy bun. Her face was hollow, devoid of makeup, her eyes wild with trapped desperation.

She picked up the black plastic telephone receiver with shaking hands.

I picked up mine.

"Where is my son?" she demanded, slamming her free palm against the acrylic glass. "What did you do with him, Clara? If you touched him, I will kill you with my bare hands!"

"Julian is safe, Elena," I said, my voice smooth and calm. "He spent the night in my guest room. He ate three pancakes this morning, and Marcus bought him some clean clothes that aren't soaked in river mud."

Elena’s face twisted in agony. "You have him? You took my child? That's kidnapping! I am his mother!"

"Child Protective Services placed him in temporary emergency custody last night after you were arrested with three passports and eighty thousand dollars in cash in your trunk, Elena," I said. "Because I am his legal next of kin through Richard's estate declaration—and because Donald Sterling stupidly filed papers declaring Julian as Richard's dependent before you got caught—the court granted me temporary kinship foster guardianship."

"No!" Elena wailed, pressing her forehead against the glass. "You can't have him! He's my leverage! He’s—"

She stopped herself, realizing what she had just said.

"He was your leverage," I repeated, letting the word sink into her chest like a spear. "That's all he ever was to you, wasn't he? A thirteen-year annuity. A golden ticket to Richard’s wallet."

"You don't know what it was like!" Elena hissed, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "Richard controlled everything! He told me what to wear, where to live, what friends I could have! He threatened to cut me off if I didn't play along with Garrett! I was trapped!"

"You weren't trapped, Elena," I said. "You chose this. You chose the jewelry. You chose the townhouse. You chose to let a dying man write a fraudulent will in an ICU while you grinned at me from the foot of his bed."

Elena glared at me through her tears, her venom returning. "You think you've won, don't you? You think you get to keep the company, the money, and now my boy? You’re fifty-two, Clara! You’re an old, barren woman playing mommy with another woman's son!"

I looked at her, feeling no anger—only a cold, distant pity.

"I don't want to play mommy, Elena," I said quietly. "Julian deserves a life free of monsters. That includes Richard. That includes Garrett. And that includes you."

"The feds are offering me a deal!" she blurted out, her voice cracking through the receiver. "Donald told my public defender! If I testify against Senator Vane, I can get down to five years! In five years, Julian will only be eighteen! He’ll come back to me!"

"He read the DNA report, Elena," I whispered.

Elena went completely still.

"He knows Garrett is his father," I said. "He knows Richard wasn't his father. And he knows that every birthday, every Christmas, and every 'father-son' moment was a scripted transaction paid for by stolen money. Do you really think an eighteen-year-old boy is ever going to look at you with love again?"

Elena dropped the plastic receiver. It swung back and forth on its metal cord, knocking against the concrete wall with a hollow, rhythmic click.

May you like

I hung up my phone, stood up, and walked out into the corridor without looking back.
