Chapter 15 - The Unraveling of Garrett Hughes

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota was located in the modern federal courthouse near the Mississippi River.
On Monday morning, I sat beside Sarah Jenkins, my new corporate counsel, in a high-security conference room on the eighth floor. Across the table sat Assistant U.S. Attorney Miller, two forensic accountants from the Internal Revenue Service, and Garrett Hughes, flanked by two criminal defense attorneys.
Garrett looked worse than he had on my back porch. His skin had taken on a sickly greenish hue, his hands shaking so violently he couldn't hold his paper coffee cup.
"Mrs. Vance," AUSA Miller began, opening a thick blue binder. "We have reviewed the forensic files you provided through Aegis Horizon, as well as the preliminary cooperation proffer submitted by Mr. Hughes this morning."
Miller looked up at Garrett with cold professional disdain.
"Mr. Hughes has agreed to enter a guilty plea to two counts of federal wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, and one count of filing false tax returns. Under the terms of the federal sentencing guidelines, he is facing between eighty-four and one hundred and eight months in a federal penitentiary."
Garrett choked back a dry sob, his fingers digging into his thighs under the table.
"In exchange for this plea," Miller continued, "Mr. Hughes has provided full evidentiary logs documenting Richard Vance’s political payoffs to Senator Vane’s state apparatus, as well as Donald Sterling's direct role in fabricating corporate share transfers."
"What about the civil forfeiture against his personal assets?" Sarah Jenkins asked, tapping her pen against the table. "Aegis Global has a pending fifteen-million-dollar civil judgment against Garrett Hughes for fraudulent conversion of corporate capital."
Garrett looked across the table at me, his eyes begging for mercy.
"Clara... please," Garrett croaked. "I have a house in Minnetonka. I have my retirement account. If you take that, I leave prison with literally zero dollars. I’ll be fifty-eight years old with nothing."
"You should have thought about your retirement twelve years ago when you started wiring corporate funds into Elena's private shell accounts, Garrett," I said, my voice deadpan.
"I did it for Julian!" Garrett shouted, leaning across the table before his lawyer grabbed his arm to hold him back. "He’s my flesh and blood! I wanted him to have an inheritance!"
"No, Garrett," I said softly, looking him dead in the eye. "You did it because you were a coward. You wanted Elena, you wanted Richard's money, and you didn't have the guts to stand on your own two feet and claim your own child. You let Richard parade that boy around like a prize pony while you sat in the corner counting the stolen pennies."
AUSA Miller cleared his throat. "Mrs. Vance, regarding the civil restitution: the Department of Justice is prepared to subordinate its secondary forfeiture claims to Aegis Global's primary lien, provided your corporate audit team continues to cooperate with our prosecution of Senator Vane’s campaign managers."
"Aegis Global will cooperate fully, Mr. Miller," I said. "On one condition."
Miller frowned slightly. "What condition?"
I looked at Garrett.
"Garrett Hughes signs an irrevocable, unconditional surrender of all parental rights regarding Julian Rossi. Today. In this room. Before the ink dries on his federal plea agreement."
Garrett’s jaw dropped. "What? No! Clara, you can't do that! He’s my son! He’s the only good thing I ever made!"
"You didn't make him a son, Garrett," I said, my voice cutting through the room like cold iron. "You made him a victim. Sign the termination of parental rights, and Aegis will allow your mother's trust to retain the Minnetonka townhouse so she isn't evicted while you're in federal prison. Refuse... and I will foreclose on that house by Friday afternoon."
Garrett stared at me, his eyes wide with absolute horror. He realized the trap was total. He had no moves left.

Slowly, with his defense attorney whispering into his ear, Garrett reached for the black pen on the table.
