Chapter 14 - The Whispers in the School Parking Lot

The morning fog over the sprawling gates of St. Jude Academy clung to the asphalt like a damp shroud. For months, Daniel had insisted on driving Lily himself. The sleek black Range Rover pulled into the private drop-off lane, moving past pristine rows of European luxury sedans and uniformed chauffeurs. In the backseat, six-year-old Lily sat clutching a soft plush rabbit, her small fingers smoothing down the frayed ears. She was wearing her freshly pressed navy cardigan, but her posture still carried the lingering, guarded stiffness of a child who had learned too early that the world could turn violent without warning.

Daniel adjusted the rearview mirror, offering a gentle smile. "Excited about art class today, sweetheart?"

Lily looked up, her wide, hazel eyes hesitating for a fraction of a second before softening. "We’re painting trees. But not just green ones. Miss Alvarez said trees can be purple if we feel like it."

"Purple trees sound perfect," Daniel said, turning off the engine.

Just as he unbuckled his seatbelt, a shadow blocked the passenger window. Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. Standing by the curb, wrapped in an oversized trench coat and dark designer sunglasses, was Claire—Victoria’s closest confidante from the country club circuit, the woman whose mocking laughter had once echoed through the mansion while Grace was forced to scrub wine stains off the floor.

Claire tapped her French-manicured fingernail against Daniel’s glass. The sound was sharp, like a small pebble striking stone.

"Stay inside, Lily," Daniel ordered softly, his voice dropping into the low, protective register he had cultivated over the past year.

He stepped out into the crisp autumn air, immediately shutting the heavy door behind him. "You’re violating the perimeter agreement, Claire. Victoria’s associates are not permitted near this campus."

Claire let out a dry, theatrical scoff, pulling down her sunglasses just enough to reveal eyes rimmed with cold calculation. "Relax, Daniel. I’m picking up my nephew. But since you’re here, you ought to know: Victoria isn't playing by your little social worker handbook anymore. You think making her take supervised visits in a sterile state office is going to break her? She comes from real blood money, Daniel. You humiliated her in front of our entire circle. You destroyed her reputation for a maid and a temperamental brat."

"Watch your tongue," Daniel warned, taking a step forward. The authority in his voice made Claire’s chin flinch back an inch. "Victoria lost her rights because she laid hands on our daughter. If you take one more step toward my car, I won’t just call security—I will file an accessory injunction against your family trust by noon."

Claire sneered, but she took a defensive half-step back toward the curb. "She has something you don't know about, Daniel. Something from before Lily was even born. You think you're the hero cleaning up a broken house? You have no idea what foundation you’re standing on."

Before Daniel could demand an explanation, the school’s security chief approached rapidly along the sidewalk. Claire turned on her stiletto heels and vanished into the flow of parent traffic. Daniel stood frozen in the cold mist, his pulse hammering against his ribs, staring at the empty space where she had stood.
