Chapter 16 - When the Monitor Steps Out

The family court building was an unfeeling monument of gray concrete and fluorescent lights. In Visitation Room 4B, Victoria sat at the laminated round table. Gone were the haute couture dresses and dripping diamonds; she wore a calculated, demure beige sweater and tailored slacks, designed to convince social workers of her reformed humility. But beneath the polished veneer, her manicured fingers twitched impatiently against her leather handbag.

A chime sounded, and the heavy metal door unlocked.

Mrs. Higgins, the court-appointed monitor, walked in, guiding Lily by the hand. "One hour, Victoria. You know the ground rules. No whispering, no promises of gifts, and no interrogating Lily about her father's home."

"Of course," Victoria purred, flashing a practiced, tearful smile. "Thank you, Mrs. Higgins. Lily, my angel, look at you!"

Lily took three reluctant steps forward. Her little shoes made squeaking noises on the linoleum. She did not run to Victoria. She did not open her arms. She stood three feet away, her head bowed, staring at Victoria’s pristine suede shoes.

"Hello, Mother," Lily said in a barely audible voice.

For forty minutes, Victoria played the part of the devoted, penitent mother, reading from a picture book and offering quiet compliments. But as the clock neared the final quarter-hour, Mrs. Higgins received an urgent knock on the observation window. Another case worker waved frantically from the hallway, signaling an emergency down the corridor.

"I need to step out for exactly two minutes," Mrs. Higgins said, checking her watch. "The cameras are rolling. Stay right where you are."

The heavy door clicked shut.

The instant the latch engaged, Victoria’s warm expression dissolved into a razor-sharp sneer. She leaned across the table, closing the distance between herself and the six-year-old child until Lily could smell her expensive floral perfume.

"Listen to me, you little ingrate," Victoria whispered, her words coated in cold venom. "You think Daddy saved you? You think your little maid is going to protect you forever? The moment this court nonsense ends, you are coming back to me. And when you do, you will pay for every single tear I had to fake in this room. Tell your father that if he doesn't drop the full custody motion, I will tell the judge about the lake house. Do you remember the lake house, Lily?"

Lily’s small face turned completely pale. Her breathing hitched, her eyes widening in sheer, paralyzing terror. She began to tremble so violently that her teeth chattered.

When Mrs. Higgins returned ninety seconds later, Victoria was sitting back, smiling warmly at a coloring book. But Lily was frozen, incapable of speaking, her hands clamped over her ears in absolute silence.
