Chapter 22 - Lily Speaks Her Truth

The court hearing for the emergency termination of Victoria’s parental rights was held behind closed doors. Judge Morrison, a veteran jurist with thirty years on the bench, sat in her private chambers alongside Dr. Sterling and the Guardian ad Litem.

Grace sat quietly in the gallery, holding Daniel’s hand as a supportive friend and ally.

Lily walked into the chamber holding the social worker’s hand. She wore her favorite yellow dress—a dress Daniel had let her choose at the department store, without a single criticism of whether it fit high-society decorum.

Judge Morrison knelt down in front of Lily, speaking in the gentlest tone possible. "Lily, sweetheart. You don't have to be afraid of anyone in this room. We are here to make sure you are safe forever. Can you tell me what you want to happen?"

Lily looked at Daniel across the room. Daniel nodded, offering a warm, reassuring smile that told her everything would be all right no matter what she said.

Lily turned back to the judge. Her small voice was clear, carrying a brave strength that stunned every adult in the room.

"Mommy told me I was a mistake," Lily whispered, her fingers tracing the edge of her skirt. "She told me that every time Daddy left, she wished I was never born. She locked me in the dark boathouse because I dropped her glass of wine. She told me if I cried, she would make Grace disappear forever."

A collective hush fell over the chamber. The court reporter’s hands hesitated over the keys.

Lily looked directly into Judge Morrison’s eyes. "Grace was the only one who didn't let Mommy hurt me. And Daddy is the only one who hugs me when I have bad dreams. I don't want to see Mommy anymore. I just want to go home with Daddy."

Judge Morrison swallowed hard, blinking back emotion. She looked up at Victoria’s defense attorney, whose head was bowed in defeated silence.

"The court will issue an immediate emergency order," Judge Morrison ruled solemnly. "Victoria Sterling’s parental rights are suspended indefinitely pending grand jury indictment. Lily remains in the sole, permanent custody of Daniel Sterling."
