Chapter 23 - The Shadow by the Garden Window

Three weeks later, the mansion finally felt like sanctuary.

The grand ballroom, once a temple of hollow elegance, had been converted into an open playroom filled with books, easels, and toys. Grace had visited for dinner that evening, celebrating her passing marks on her nursing entrance exams. Laughter had filled the dining room—real laughter, untainted by fear.

By 10:30 PM, Grace had returned to her apartment, and Lily was fast asleep in her room upstairs. Daniel sat in his study reviewing the final papers to formally strip Victoria’s name from all trust deeds and estate titles. Victoria was currently being held without bail in the county detention center, facing federal charges for embezzlement and felony child abuse.

The nightmare was finally over. Or so Daniel believed.

Outside, the autumn wind rustled the high oak trees.

Suddenly, the interior lights of the mansion flickered once, twice, and died.

The hum of the central heating system cut out instantly. Daniel stood up, his senses instantly on high alert. The backup generator should have kicked in within five seconds.

Ten seconds passed. Absolute silence.

Daniel pulled his tactical flashlight from his desk drawer and clicked it on. He moved cautiously into the grand hallway. The vast marble floor, once spotless, reflected the narrow beam of his light.

Then, his phone buzzed violently in his pocket. It was an urgent text from Grace.

*DANIEL! CHECK THE NEWS! A transport van carrying Victoria to the regional medical wing was ambushed twenty minutes ago on Route 9! Julian Ross was spotted! SHE ESCAPED!*

Daniel’s blood turned to liquid ice.

He sprinted up the marble staircase, taking the steps three at a time. "Lily!" he yelled, his heart pounding in his throat. "LILY!"

He threw open Lily’s bedroom door and swung the beam of the flashlight across the room.

The bed was empty. The blankets were thrown back. The window leading out to the second-story garden balcony stood wide open, cold autumn wind whipping the curtains into the room.

And on the pristine white wooden sill of the window, smeared in dark, sticky red liquid, was a freshly scrawled message:

*“TOLD YOU YOU WOULD PAY, DANIEL.”*
