Chapter 1 - THE BABY SHOWERThe room smelled like vanilla frosting, fresh roses, and expensive champagne.

Silver balloons floated beneath the chandelier while a tower of blue-and-white cupcakes stood beneath a hand-painted sign:
WELCOME, LITTLE ONE.
I was eight months pregnant with the baby I had spent three years praying for.
My hand rested protectively over my swollen stomach as I watched my husband walk through the front door.
Julian Vance wasn't alone.
His arm was wrapped around the waist of a beautiful twenty-two-year-old woman.
Chloe Martin.
His mistress.
And judging by the satisfied smile on his mother's face, she hadn't come to apologize.
She had come to replace me.
Beatrice Vance tapped her spoon against her champagne glass.
"Everyone," she announced, smiling broadly, "I'd like you to meet the woman who will finally give this family the heir it deserves."
The room went silent.
My heart didn't break.
Not yet.
It simply became very, very cold.
I looked at Julian.
"Get out."
He stared at me.
"What?"
"Both of you."
Chloe touched her stomach dramatically.
Julian's jaw tightened.
"You don't get to embarrass me in front of my family."
I stared at him.
"I am eight months pregnant with your child."
"And you're making a scene."
Then he punched me.
His fist drove directly into my stomach.
The world disappeared.
I hit the gift table hard enough to send boxes, ribbons, cupcakes, and silver balloons crashing across the floor.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then pain exploded through my abdomen.
I curled around my baby.
"Please..."
My voice barely existed.
"Please, move..."
Then I felt it.
One tiny kick.
Alive.
My baby was still alive.
Across the room, Julian adjusted his cufflinks.
His mother smiled.
His father actually applauded.
Julian looked down at me.
"She's carrying the real heir," he sneered. "You barren trash."
Something inside me went completely still.
Not my heart.
Not my love for my baby.
Something else.
The last piece of me that still believed these people deserved mercy.
I smiled through the blood on my lip.
Because Julian didn't know something.
None of them did.
For months, I had quietly copied Arthur Vance's secret ledgers.
Shell companies.
Bribes.
Offshore accounts.
Money laundering.
Federal investigators already had everything.
And the FBI raid was scheduled for exactly 2:00 PM.
I looked at my shattered watch.
1:59.
The wall clock ticked.
The front doors shook.
Three hard knocks.
Then a voice thundered through the house.
"FBI! OPEN THE DOOR!"
Julian's face turned white.
May you like
I smiled.
"You really should have checked who you married."
