Chapter 4 - THE FATHER I RAN FROMTwenty minutes later, two men in black suits entered my hospital room.

Then my father walked in.

Marcus Hale.

Sixty-two.

Silver hair.

Gray eyes.

A presence that seemed to make the room smaller.

He looked at my bruised face.

Then at my bandaged stomach.

His jaw tightened.

But he didn't ask questions.

He simply opened his arms.

I cried against his chest.

For the first time in ten years, I was no longer Clara Bennett.

I was Daddy's little girl.

When I finally pulled away, he said:

"Tell me everything."

So I did.

The marriage.

The betrayal.

The illegal company.

The baby shower.

The punch.

The FBI raid.

The custody battle.

When I finished, he walked to the window.

"You hid from me because you were afraid of my power."

"Yes."

He turned.

"And you married a man who had more darkness than I ever did."

My eyes filled with tears.

"I thought he was safe."

My father returned to the bed.

"You were wrong."

He took my hand.

"But you're home now."

Then he made one promise.

"They will never touch you again."

The next morning, Chloe appeared.

No makeup.

No designer dress.

No smug smile.

She looked terrified.

"I was never pregnant."

I already knew.

But then she gave us something far more valuable.

Julian's backup phone.

Messages.

Recordings.

Plans.

Evidence.

One message stopped my breath.

She's nothing. Once I have the baby, I'll have her committed.

Another was worse.

Hit her if you have to. She won't press charges.

My father looked at the screen.

May you like

His expression became terrifyingly calm.

"Now," he said, "we take everything from him."
