Chapter 12 - THE GRAVE BENEATH THE MARBLE

The drive back to the family estate felt like descending into a tomb that had refused to stay shut.
At 4:30 AM, the massive iron gates hung chained and padlocked, wrapped in yellow police tape that had faded and weathered over fourteen months of abandonment. Ethan cut the chains with heavy bolt cutters, the snap of steel echoing through the dense pine woods surrounding the property. Claire sat in the passenger seat of the SUV, holding June tightly in her arms. She had refused to stay behind at the safehouse Marcus Vance had offered.
"We don't separate," Claire had said, her voice hard as iron, though her fingers trembled as she stroked June’s curls. "We made that mistake once. Never again."
The estate loomed out of the predawn fog like a derelict ocean liner. The terrace where Ethan had tackled his mother—sending her crashing through the glass cocktail bar in a rain of shards and spilled bourbon—was covered in dead leaves and windblown debris. The pool, once a glittering expanse of turquoise luxury, had been drained by order of the court; it was now a gaping concrete pit, its bottom scarred by cracks and stains of dark, dried moss.
Ethan stepped out into the biting air, flashlight in hand. He led Claire and June through the side entrance, past the boarded-up French doors. The interior smelled of dust, dry rot, and old money turned sour.
Every shadow seemed to hold the silhouette of his mother, Victoria, lunging forward with that monstrous, manic determination in her eyes. Ethan remembered the sound of Claire’s pregnant belly hitting the water, the suffocating panic as he dove in fully clothed, the sickening crunch of bone when Victoria had tried to claw his eyes out as he pulled Claire onto the coping.
"The library," Ethan whispered, guiding them past the ruined drawing room.
In the grand library, the portrait of Daniel Vance still dominated the wall above the marble fireplace. Daniel was depicted in his prime—imposing, sharp-jawed, wearing the gold signet ring that had arrived in Ethan’s mailbox hours ago.
Ethan set a ladder against the mantelpiece and climbed up. Behind the massive gilded frame, the wainscoting sounded hollow. With the edge of his crowbar, Ethan pried open the oak paneling.
Inside sat a reinforced titanium lockbox, its digital display blinking red: *BIOMETRIC AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED.*
"Daniel always keyed his personal safes to family blood," Ethan muttered, his heart hammering against his ribs. He pressed his thumb against the glass pad.
A shrill beep echoed through the empty room: *ACCESS DENIED. DNA MISMATCH.*
Ethan froze, the flashlight shaking in his grip. "What? That's impossible."
"Ethan, let me try," Claire whispered from below.
"It’s keyed to the Vance bloodline, Claire. You aren't—"
"Ethan, look at the message on the screen," Claire pointed.
Beneath the denial, glowing green letters blinked: *SECONDARY MATERNAL/HEIR OVERRIDE AVAILABLE.*
Claire climbed the small steps, holding June carefully on her hip. She reached out June’s tiny hand and pressed the baby’s thumb against the glass sensor.
The lockbox chimed softly. The red light shifted to brilliant emerald.
*WELCOME, HEIR OF DANIEL VANCE.*
A mechanical hiss followed as the hydraulic seal released, the heavy door swinging open to reveal not stacks of bearer bonds, nor gold bars, but a single, leather-bound journal and a notarized DNA report dated twenty-five years ago.
Claire pulled the papers out under the beam of the flashlight. Her eyes scanned the first page, and Ethan watched her face shatter in real time.
"Ethan..." Claire’s voice was barely a breath, fragile and horrified.
"What is it?" Ethan demanded, stepping down beside her. "Claire, what does it say?"
Claire turned the document toward him. It was a certified paternity test from a Swiss genetic laboratory.
"Ethan," Claire whispered, tears spilling over her lashes. "Daniel Vance wasn't your biological father. He adopted you when you were two days old to cover an illicit scandal. The biological heir to the Vance empire... the child Daniel had with his first secret wife before he ever married Victoria..."
Claire turned the page, her finger pointing to the infant’s registered name.
May you like
"It was me, Ethan. I am Daniel Vance's biological daughter. And your mother didn't try to kill me to protect your inheritance. She tried to drown me because the day June was born, the entire estate legally ceased to belong to her—and transferred entirely to me."
