Chapter 16 - THE CAGE OF WHISPERS

St. Jude Psychiatric Institute sat on a windswept bluff overlooking the grey, churning waters of the Long Island Sound. Surrounded by three layers of razor-wire fencing and guarded by state troopers with drug-sniffing dogs, it looked less like a hospital and more like a fortress designed to hold demons.

Evelyn Cross flashed her credentials at the security checkpoint. The guards, recognizing the federal seal, waved them through the reinforced sally port without hesitation.

"Only two visitors permitted in Maximum Ward C," the sergeant on duty announced, his eyes lingering suspiciously on Ethan. "No electronics. No metal objects. You get twenty minutes through the reinforced glass. If she shows signs of agitation, we flood the room with aerosolized sedative. Understood?"

"Understood," Ethan said, his jaw clenched tight.

He left June in Evelyn’s care inside the private security office, Claire kissing their daughter’s forehead three times before turning to face the iron door.

"You ready?" Ethan asked, taking Claire’s cold hand.

"No," Claire whispered. "Let’s go."

The corridor of Ward C smelled of heavy bleach and industrial floor wax. Fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting an sickly green pallor over the concrete walls. At the end of the hall, behind a double-locked door with an electronic keypad, was Cell 104.

The orderly slid back the heavy steel viewing panel.

Inside sat Victoria Vance.

She wore an oversized white institutional smock, her once-immaculate chestnut hair streaked with silver and hanging loosely around her shoulders. Her face was gaunt, the elegant high cheekbones now sharp and skeletal beneath translucent skin. Her left shoulder sat slightly lower than her right—the lasting memento of the cocktail bar she had crashed through under the weight of Ethan's tackle.

She did not look up when the heavy door buzzed and swung open. She was staring intently at a small spot on the stainless-steel table, her fingers tracing invisible circles on the cold metal.

Ethan and Claire sat down on the bolted chairs opposite her.

"Mother," Ethan said, the word tasting like ash in his mouth.

Victoria’s fingers stopped tracing. Slowly, with an agonizing deliberation that made Ethan’s skin crawl, she lifted her head.

Her eyes were not dull. They were not vacant with medication. They burned with a terrifying, piercing lucidity that pinned Ethan to his chair.

"You brought her," Victoria whispered. Her voice was hoarse, raspy from months of feigned silence, yet every syllable was razor-sharp. "You brought Daniel's little bastard into my sanctuary."

Claire did not flinch. "I am the legal owner of everything you spent thirty years trying to steal, Victoria. And June is the heir."

Victoria let out a low, dry chuckle that sounded like dead leaves scraping against concrete. "Steal? You poor, pathetic girl. You think Daniel loved your mother? He used her to launder maritime revenue through Swiss shell trusts, and when she threatened to expose him, he paid the clinic to switch her medication. He was a monster, Claire. A monster in tailored Italian suits."

"Stop it!" Ethan slammed his hand on the table, the sound reverberating through the glass. "Why did you push her into the pool, Victoria? Evelyn told us about the Blackwood Consortium. We know about the bearer cylinder. Tell us where it is, or we walk out of here and let the syndicate liquidate every dime Daniel left behind!"

Victoria leaned forward, the chains around her wrists clanking against the table. Her eyes locked onto Ethan’s with an intensity that took the air straight from his lungs.

"You fool," she hissed, her voice dropping so low the microphones in the ceiling could barely register it. "You think I threw her into the pool to kill her? If I wanted to kill Claire, she would have died in her sleep during her first trimester, and no coroner in this state would have found the trace. Look at the security footage from that day, Ethan! Look at where the cameras were aimed!"

Ethan’s brow furrowed. "What are you talking about?"

"The cocktail bar," Victoria whispered, her eyes wide with frantic urgency. "The bar had four hidden micro-lenses installed by Arthur Vance. Daniel’s brother. The head of Blackwood. They had a sniper on the boathouse roof keyed to Claire's heart rate monitor! The pool was the only blind spot on the entire terrace! I pushed her into the deep end because water refracts thermal scopes, you idiot! I forced you into the water with her to trigger the estate's panic lockdown and drag you both beneath the line of fire!"
