Chapter 15 - THE DEVIL IN WHITE SILK

"They have the perimeter covered," Ethan whispered, his military training from six years in the Marine reserves kicking in, sharp and electric. "They aren't moving in. Why aren't they moving in?"
"Because they don't have the master key," Evelyn Cross answered, closing her briefcase with a crisp snap. "The Geneva vault cannot be unlocked by DNA alone. Daniel was paranoid. He knew biometric data could be harvested from a corpse. To unlock the accounts, the true heir must present the physical bearer cylinder hidden inside this house. And only one person alive knows the exact coordinates of that cylinder."
"Who?" Claire asked, pulling June tighter.
"Victoria," Evelyn said.
Ethan let out a bitter, disbelieving laugh. "My mother hasn't spoken a coherent sentence to anyone in fourteen months. The state psychiatrists say she is catatonic. She stares at the wall of her cell and drools."
"Victoria Vance graduated magna cum laude from Columbia Law," Evelyn replied with an icy smile. "She played Lady Macbeth for three decades while Daniel moved billions through shadow accounts. If you think she’s drooling, you haven't been paying attention. She’s waiting for you, Ethan. She knows you will come to her when the walls close in. Because without her, June has a price tag on her head that will never expire."
Ethan turned to Claire. The dawn light was beginning to fracture through the broken blinds, illuminating the dark circles beneath her eyes, the exhaustion carved into her features. She looked down at June, who was beginning to stir, her small fingers clutching Claire’s collar.
"We go to the facility," Claire said suddenly. Her voice did not shake.
"Claire, no," Ethan protested. "That woman tried to drown you. She tried to murder our daughter in the womb!"
"And if we run to Zurich without that cylinder, those men in the SUVs will hunt us down in every airport in Europe," Claire countered, her eyes flashing with a fierce, mother's resolve. "I was an orphan my whole life, Ethan. I grew up in group homes while your father watched me from the shadows and built an empire on my bloodline. I will not let June spend her childhood running from his ghosts. We face Victoria. Today."
Evelyn Cross checked her watch. "The morning shift at the St. Jude Psychiatric Institute begins in forty minutes. I have secured two visitor clearance badges under federal subpoena authority. But Ethan... you must prepare yourself. The woman you meet in that cell is not the mother who baked you bread or cheered at your regattas. That woman never existed."
They moved through the estate's underground cellar, navigating the old service tunnels that Daniel had constructed during the Cold War to bypass the main security gates. Ten minutes later, they emerged into an overgrown drainage culvert two miles down the highway, where Evelyn had concealed an armored sedan.
As they sped toward the state facility, Ethan watched the rear window. The black SUVs remained parked at the estate, completely unaware that their targets had slipped through their fingers.
But as Ethan looked down at Daniel's cracked pocket watch resting in his palm, he noticed something he had missed in the dark.
Engraved inside the inner rim of the casing was a fresh inscription, scratched recently with a diamond-tipped stylus:

*The water was the only place the microphones couldn't hear us, Ethan.*
