Chapter 14 - THE COUNTDOWN AT THE VAULT

"You broke into my house," Ethan snarled, taking a threatening step forward, the iron poker raised. "You put a vial under my daughter's crib."

"I broke nothing," Evelyn Cross said without flinching, her cold gray eyes meeting his without a hint of hesitation. "Your front door was unlocked by an operative who was tasked with killing all three of you tonight. I intercepted him in your driveway, put two bullets through his radiator, and left that parcel on your mat so you would run here. The white gardenia? That was his calling card. He works for the Blackwood Consortium. Victoria's creditors."

Claire stepped out from behind the desk, her voice trembling but fierce. "Victoria is in an asylum. She doesn't have creditors. She has court-appointed guardians!"

"You child," Evelyn said softly, looking at Claire with an expression that bordered on genuine pity. "You think a woman like Victoria Vance allows herself to be locked in a cage unless that cage is the safest place on earth? The cocktail bar incident was the greatest legal gift you could have given her, Ethan. By putting her in an institution under criminal insanity pleas, her personal assets were frozen from federal seizure. But her debts to the syndicate that funded Daniel’s shipping expansion? Those debts did not vanish."

Evelyn opened the briefcase. Inside lay three airline tickets to Zurich, three synthetic diplomatic passports, and a digital countdown timer synced to an international banking server.

The timer read: *07:42:19.*

"Seven hours," Evelyn said, tapping the glass of the timer. "At noon today, June turns exactly fourteen months old. Under the amended Swiss code governing Daniel's blind trusts, the final verification window closes. Either Claire appears in person at the Private Bank of Geneva to claim the primary ledger, or the default clause triggers. And if the default triggers, the entire Vance trust—worth roughly four hundred and eighty million dollars—defaults directly to the Blackwood Consortium."

"And what happens to us?" Claire asked.

"Dead heirs don't file probate appeals," Evelyn stated bluntly. "Victoria knew the syndicate was coming for you. The moment she realized you had survived the pool and June was born healthy, she knew the consortium would eliminate you both before the trust could transfer. Why do you think she provoked you into that fight, Ethan? Why do you think she let you throw her through that glass?"

Ethan felt a suffocating pressure in his chest. "You're saying... she wanted me to beat her?"

"She wanted you to make a scene so violent, so public, with so many high-society witnesses, that the district attorney would have no choice but to place her in a maximum-security state facility under 24-hour armed guard," Evelyn explained. "She sacrificed her reputation, her freedom, and her ribs to put herself behind blast-proof glass. But she left you out in the open. As bait."

"Bait for what?" Ethan demanded.

"For the man who actually hired the diver who sank Daniel's yacht," Evelyn said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The man who is standing outside this estate right now with a tactical surveillance unit. Look out the north window, Ethan."

Ethan moved slowly to the grime-covered window and peered through the broken slat.

Parked along the tree line half a mile away were three unmarked black SUVs, their infrared scanners sweeping the exterior walls of the mansion with faint, pulsing beams of crimson light.
