Chapter 18 - THE BLOODLINE TEST

"June!" Claire’s scream tore through the red-lit darkness of the cell. She threw her entire weight against the reinforced security door, clawing at the electronic keypad, her fingernails tearing against the cold steel. "June! Give me back my baby!"

Ethan grabbed Claire, pulling her back before she broke her hands against the door. "Claire, listen to me! Look at me! We are getting her back! We are getting her back right now!"

"The emergency lockdown overrides from the maintenance duct beneath the floorboards!" Victoria shouted from across the table, rattling her chains frantically. "Ethan! In the corner—the drainage grate! Use the leg of the steel chair! The bolts are loose on the eastern anchor!"

Ethan didn't hesitate. He seized the heavy steel stool, planted his boots against the concrete wall, and heaved with everything in his body. His muscles screamed, his veins bulging against his neck, until the anchor bolts gave way with a screech of shearing metal.

He rammed the steel leg into the drainage grate, using it as a lever. With a brutal grunt of exertion, the cast-iron cover popped off, revealing a narrow utility conduit filled with steam pipes and wiring harnesses.

"Go!" Victoria commanded, her eyes locked on Ethan. "Follow the red conduit! It leads directly behind the administration security desk! Ethan... wait!"

Ethan paused, half his body already inside the dark shaft. He looked back at his mother—the woman he had hated for fourteen months, the woman who had terrorized his marriage, now sitting chained in an asylum cell, her smock stained with sweat and tears.

Victoria reached into her collar, biting down hard on the hem of her smock until the thread tore. With her teeth, she pulled out a small, flat titanium key wrapped in plastic, spitting it onto the floorboards beside the duct.

"The bearer cylinder isn't at the estate," Victoria whispered, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "It was never at the estate. Daniel hid it inside the base of the yellow wooden ramp he built with you in your workshop. He loved you, Ethan. He wasn't your blood, but you were the only real son he ever had. Now go save your daughter!"

Ethan grabbed the key, looked at his mother one last time, and nodded. "Hold on, Claire. Follow me!"

They crawled through the suffocating heat of the maintenance shaft, their elbows scraping against raw concrete and rusted pipe brackets. The sirens wailed continuously overhead, mixed with the frantic shouts of guards and the sound of distant gunfire near the front gates.

Ethan kicked out the ventilation grille behind the administration corridor. He dropped onto the linoleum, catching Claire as she slid out behind him.

The security office was a disaster zone. Two state troopers lay unconscious on the floor, their zip-ties cut and their sidearms missing. The baby carrier Ethan had set on the desk was empty. June’s yellow blanket lay discarded on the floorboards, next to an open laptop that was still broadcasting a real-time banking confirmation screen.

*GENEVA CENTRAL LEDGER: TRUST TRANSFER IN PROGRESS. REMAINING WINDOW: 03:14:02.*

Beside the laptop was an envelope labeled: *ETHAN VANCE.*

Ethan tore it open. Inside was a single printed document from the Massachusetts Department of Vital Records—an original birth certificate that had been sealed under a judicial order thirty-one years ago.

Claire peered over his shoulder, her breathing ragged. "Ethan... what is that?"

Ethan’s eyes scanned the document.

Child: *Ethan Vance.*

Mother: *Victoria Vance.*

Father: *Arthur Vance.*

Ethan felt his stomach lurch violently. "Daniel wasn't the sterile one," Ethan whispered, the horrific truth falling into place like a series of guillotine blades. "Arthur was my biological father. Victoria had an affair with Arthur thirty-one years ago. Daniel found out, blackmailed them both, and claimed me as his own to control Arthur's shipping shares."

"Which means..." Claire gasped, her hand flying to her throat. "Ethan... you aren't an orphan adopted from Boston. You are Arthur’s direct blood heir. And June..."

"June isn't just Daniel's genetic heir through you, Claire," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a register of pure, terrifying coldness. "She is the unification of both brothers' bloodlines. The only person on earth who can hold the entire four-hundred-million-dollar empire without a challenge from the board."

He looked toward the glass double doors leading to the facility’s executive helipad on the bluff.

Through the rain-streaked glass, the rotors of a twin-engine corporate helicopter were beginning to spin, its wash flattening the high grass of the bluff.

Standing on the tarmac beneath an umbrella was Evelyn Cross. And in the arms of a tall, silver-haired man in a black cashmere coat was fourteen-month-old June.
