Luca showed almost no emotion.
Then the judge ordered him taken into custody pending sentencing.
As deputies approached, Luca finally looked at me.
“Jessi.”
I did not answer.
“I never wanted you dead.”
I believed him.
That was almost worse.
He had not necessarily wanted me dead.
He had simply decided his ambitions were important enough to risk my life.
