Chapter 19 - The Letter I Finally OpenedThree years after the crash, I found Luca’s unopened letter while moving boxes.

I almost threw it away.
Instead, I opened it.
Most of the letter was exactly what I expected.
Excuses.
Justifications.
Claims that pressure had changed him.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
There was one sentence I had not expected.
THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT THE NIGHT OF YOUR ACCIDENT THAT EVEN MARIANA DOESN’T KNOW.
Below it was a number.
Not a phone number.
A storage unit.
Seattle.
I showed Samuel.
Then Noah.
Noah immediately said, “Absolutely not.”
Naturally, that meant we went together.
Inside the storage unit were boxes of old hospital records.
Financial documents.
Hard drives.
And one sealed envelope with my name written across it.
JESSI.
DO NOT OPEN UNLESS LUCA IS GONE.
I stared at it.
Samuel stood beside me.
“You don’t have to open it.”
For years, Luca had controlled truth by deciding what I was allowed to know.
I picked up the envelope.
“Yes.”
May you like
I broke the seal.
“I do.”
