Chapter 14 - The Ghost in the Glass

"He's a serial black widow," Sarah said, her voice shaking as the contents of the titanium flash drive uploaded onto her encrypted laptop. "Except he’s a black widower targeting multi-million dollar heiresses across three continents."

The files were an archive of terror. Julian Vance wasn't an orphaned Boston aristocrat with venture capital backing. That entire persona was an intricate fabrication built by a sophisticated criminal syndicate.

The documents revealed high-resolution photographs of four other young women, all stunning, all the sole heirs to vast industrial and shipping empires. In each file, Julian was there—different hair colors, subtly altered facial hair, different tailored suits, but always sporting that same charismatic, sociopathic smile.

And within two years of marrying each woman, every single one had died in a tragic, catastrophic 'accident.' Julian had collected over four hundred million dollars in life insurance policies and estate transfers, vanishing into thin air before emerging with a new identity.

"Emily was supposed to be the crown jewel," Vanessa murmured, staring at the screen in sick fascination. "The Hayes Petroleum Trust is worth nearly two billion. If you had fallen off that cliff, Emily, Julian would have inherited everything as your grieving husband within ninety days."

"Except I didn't die," Emily said, her gaze hardening into something feral. "And neither did he."

Suddenly, the lights in the mansion flickered.

A low, deep hum resonated through the walls as the power grid died. Total darkness swallowed the great room, save for the blue glare of Sarah’s laptop screen.

"What happened?" Vanessa whimpered, instantly backing toward the wall. "The backup generator should have kicked in!"

"The wires were cut," Emily whispered, setting her Scotch glass down without a sound. "Stay low. Both of you."

From the floor above—the master suite—came the unmistakable, rhythmic creak of expensive leather shoes treading across hardwood.

*Step. Step. Step.*

Emily’s pulse hammered behind her temples, loud as a war drum. She reached into the drawer beneath the bar, pulling out the small Glock 19 her late father had insisted she keep in the house. She racked the slide, chambering a nine-millimeter round with a decisive, metallic *clack*.

"Sarah, call the police on the burner phone," Emily commanded under her breath. "Vanessa, get into the panic pantry behind the kitchen."

"Emily, don't go up there!" Vanessa begged, tears streaming down her cheeks. "He wants you up there!"

"I spent my whole life being managed by men who thought I was an ornament," Emily hissed, stepping toward the grand spiraling staircase. "If Julian Vance wants my life, he’s going to have to take it from the barrel of this gun."

She ascended the stairs into the shadows, the silence of the mansion broken only by the whistling wind outside and the terrifying, deliberate footsteps lingering right outside her bedroom door.
