Chapter 2 - Shattered Silk

The name hung in the damp coastal air like a toxic vapor.
*Julian.*
Emily blinked through her tears, her chest hitching as Daniel’s grip around her tightened instantly—so tight it bordered on painful. For a fraction of a second, his body went completely rigid, like a man who had stepped on a landmine.
“She’s completely lost her mind,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a low, commanding register as he turned his head to glare at Vanessa. “Security! Where the hell is security?!”
Two burly resort guards in navy blazers finally burst through the terrace gates, accompanied by the wedding planner, whose face was completely drained of color.
“Get this woman out of here!” Daniel barked, standing up and shielding Emily with his body. His voice was steady, the authoritative tone of a man who managed billions of dollars in assets, but Emily, still trembling on the ground, noticed something that chilled her marrow: Daniel’s left hand, hidden behind his thigh, was trembling so hard his fingers fluttered against his trousers. “She tried to murder my fiancée. Call the Monterey County Sheriff. Now!”
The guards descended on Vanessa, pulling her roughly to her feet. Surprisingly, she didn't fight back. She didn't scream or resist. She allowed herself to be cuffed with zip-ties, her gaze never wavering from Emily.
“Emmy, listen to me,” Vanessa pleaded, her voice dropping into an urgent, terrifying whisper as the guards began dragging her toward the interior corridors. “Do not sign the papers! Check his offshore accounts! Look at his phone—ask him about Geneva, 2019! He’s not Daniel Vance! Ask him who Julian Vance was married to before you!”
“Get her out of my sight!” Daniel roared, his voice echoing off the coastal cliffs.
The guards dragged Vanessa through the French doors, her heels scraping against the stone until the door slammed shut, cutting off her frantic cries.
The terrace went eerily silent, save for the crash of the ocean waves far below and the ragged breathing of the three people left behind.
Sarah was still on her knees, leaning against the wooden railing, holding her lower back where the tripod had struck her. Her face was pale, beads of sweat dotting her forehead.
“Sarah,” Emily cried, crawling across the deck to the photographer. “Oh God, Sarah, you saved my life. You took that hit for me.”
Sarah managed a faint, pained smile, waving a hand dismissively. “Adrenaline is a crazy thing, Miss Emily. Are you hurt? Can you stand?”
“I... I think so,” Emily whispered, looking down at herself.
The dress was ruined. The lower skirt had been ripped to shreds by the steel beam beneath the deck, exposing her bruised and scraped shins. Her veil was gone—she could see it floating far below on the dark blue swells of the ocean, a ghost of tulle drifting toward the rocks.
Daniel crouched beside Emily, his expression transforming back into the loving, protective partner she had known for three years. He gently wrapped his tuxedo jacket around her exposed, shivering shoulders.
“Come on, sweetheart,” he murmured softly, kissing her temple. “Let’s get you inside. The paramedics are already on their way. We need to check those cuts.”
He scooped Emily up into his arms. Emily wrapped her arms around his neck, resting her head against his shoulder. But as he carried her through the corridor of the luxury resort, passing horrified bridesmaids and pale-faced groomsmen who had gathered in the lobby, Vanessa’s words echoed relentlessly in her mind.
*“Check his phone. Ask him about Geneva, 2019.”*
Why had Vanessa called him Julian? Julian was Daniel’s supposedly deceased older brother—the brother Daniel rarely spoke about, the brother who had reportedly drowned in an accidental boating accident off the coast of Lake Geneva five years ago.
“Daniel?” Emily whispered against his ear as they entered the private medical holding room in the resort’s administrative wing.
“Shh, don't talk, my love,” Daniel said gently, laying her down onto an examination bed. “You’ve experienced severe trauma. You’re in shock.”
“Why would Vanessa say those things?” Emily pressed, her voice trembling. “She said... she said you were Julian. She told me not to sign the papers.”
Daniel paused. He stopped tucking the wool blanket around her legs and looked straight into her eyes. There was profound sorrow in his gaze, perfectly framed by his soft green eyes. He reached out and stroked her cheek with the back of his warm thumb.
“Vanessa was in love with me, Emily,” Daniel said with a heavy, mournful sigh.
Emily froze. “What?”
“Two weeks ago, she came to my office in San Francisco,” Daniel continued, shaking his head with bitter regret. “She begged me to call off the wedding. She told me she had been in love with me since the day you introduced us. She threatened that if I married you, she would destroy us both. I thought she was just being emotional, having some sort of temporary breakdown. I was an idiot. I should have banned her from the wedding. I thought she would pull herself together for your sake. I never... I never dreamed she was capable of something this psychotic.”
The explanation was clean. It was logical. It fit the narrative of a jealous, unhinged woman who couldn't bear to see her best friend get the fairy-tale life she craved.
Yet, something inside Emily’s stomach twisted into a cold, hard knot.
If Vanessa was merely a jealous woman trying to steal Daniel, why had she kicked the tripod into Sarah’s back while screaming, *“If you live, what he does to you will kill you anyway”*?
Why would a jealous mistress want the bride dead *to save her* from the groom?
The door opened, and a team of Monterey County paramedics rushed in, carrying medical bags and a trauma kit. Behind them stood two uniformed Sheriff's deputies with clipboards.
“Mr. and Mrs. Vance?” the lead deputy asked.
“Miss Hayes. We aren’t married yet,” Emily clarified instinctively, wincing as a paramedic applied antiseptic to the deep laceration on her knee.
Daniel stepped between Emily and the deputies, extending his hand. “I’m Daniel Vance. My fiancée needs immediate medical clearance, but I can give you a full statement right now about the assault. Vanessa Caldwell attacked her unprovoked. We have the entire thing witnessed by our photographer.”
“Actually, Mr. Vance,” the deputy replied, looking down at his notepad, “the suspect is currently in the back of our patrol cruiser. She’s refusing to speak to anyone except the bride. And she claims that if Miss Hayes signs the pre-nuptial deed of trust scheduled for this evening, Miss Hayes will be dead before the honeymoon ends.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened. For a fraction of a second, the gentle, doting groom vanished, replaced by an expression of cold, predatory calculation.
“She’s having an acute paranoid episode, Officer,” Daniel said smoothly, lowering his voice. “My fiancée has a trust fund inherited from her late grandfather—the Hayes Petroleum estate. Vanessa has always resented Emily’s wealth. She’s trying to poison Emily’s mind because she couldn’t take my life with her hands.”
Emily watched Daniel as he spoke. He was commanding, convincing, utterly bulletproof.
Then she looked down at the bed table beside her.
Daniel had placed his personal smartphone face-up on the glass tray while he had picked her up earlier.
The screen suddenly lit up with a silent notification.
A message had just arrived from an unsaved international number with a Swiss country code (+41).
The preview text on the locked screen read:
*“The offshore trust transfer is staged. Once the death certificate is certified post-ceremony, the 45 million unlocks in Zurich. Do not mess this up, Julian.”*
Emily’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart stopped beating for an entire three seconds.
She stared at the name on the screen.
May you like
*Julian.*
