Chapter 5 - A Wolf in Designer Wool

The silence in the small cottage was deafening.

Emily stared at the glowing monitor, her fingers digging so hard into the edge of the desk that her knuckles turned chalk white. The image on the screen was undeniable proof. The high-resolution lens had captured every horrific detail: the terror in Vanessa’s eyes, the bruising pressure of Julian’s fingers around her windpipe, and the glowing text message on the phone screen that turned the entire narrative inside out.

Vanessa hadn't gone mad. Vanessa had been trapped in a sadistic, impossible nightmare.

“Julian planned the cliff fall from the very beginning,” Emily whispered, her voice barely a breath. The pieces of the puzzle began clicking together with horrifying speed. “He didn't want to wait for the honeymoon. He wanted me dead *today*.”

“Think about the legal mechanics, Emily,” Sarah said, leaning over the laptop, her expression grim. Sarah wasn't just a wedding photographer; her sharp, analytical tone betrayed something far deeper. “If you died today *before* the vows, your estate would fall to your next of kin. But if you fell off that cliff, ‘miraculously’ survived, and then in a state of emotional shock and profound gratitude, signed that expedited post-nuptial asset trust tonight... then had a ‘tragic relapse’ or an ‘accidental overdose’ of sedatives during the night... he becomes the sole executor of forty-five million dollars by tomorrow morning.”

Emily’s head spun. “And Vanessa was his scapegoat. If Vanessa pushed me, Julian could play the grieving hero who tried to save his bride. If I died, Vanessa went to prison for life, and Julian inherited everything without a shred of suspicion.”

“Exactly,” Sarah said grimly. “He orchestrated the whole thing. He threatened Vanessa’s sister to force her to do the dirty work. But on the terrace, Vanessa snapped. She couldn't actually go through with watching you die, but she was terrified of what Julian would do to her sister. That’s why she was laughing hysterically—she had completely broken under the psychological torture.”

Emily turned to look at Sarah, a sudden realization hitting her. “Sarah... how did you know to look for this? Why did you have your camera pointed at that secluded garden path forty-five minutes before the ceremony?”

Sarah paused. She reached behind her neck, unhooked a silver chain hidden beneath her hoodie, and pulled out an engraved gold signet ring.

She set the ring on the desk next to the keyboard.

Engraved on the gold crest was a Swiss family seal: an eagle perched atop three mountain peaks.

“My real name isn't Sarah Miller,” the photographer said softly, meeting Emily’s gaze with eyes that were cold, sharp, and blazing with righteous fury. “My name is Sarah Vance. I’m Daniel and Julian’s younger sister.”

Emily stumbled back a step, gasping. “You’re... you’re their sister?”

“Julian was always a sociopath,” Sarah said, her voice trembling with five years of buried grief. “Our father built an empire in private banking in Geneva. Daniel was the golden boy—kind, ethical, brilliant. Julian was a gambler, an embezzler, a parasite. Five years ago, Julian stole eighteen million euros from our family bank. Daniel found out. Daniel confronted him on our yacht on Lake Geneva.”

Tears welled in Sarah’s eyes, but she blinked them away with fierce resolve. “Julian drugged Daniel’s whiskey. He threw our brother into the icy water and watched him drown. Then he staged the scene, burned Daniel’s dental records, and assumed Daniel’s identity using fake international passports. The Swiss authorities ruled Daniel dead, but the body was never recovered. And Julian vanished with Daniel’s credentials and our family’s remaining overseas capital.”

Emily put a hand over her mouth. “He stole his own dead brother’s life.”

“He came to America, set up his boutique hedge fund, and started hunting,” Sarah continued, clicking through another folder on her laptop. “He needed a massive influx of clean capital to pay off the European syndicates he owes money to. And then he found you. The heiress to the Hayes Petroleum fortune. An only child with no living parents, only an aging, distant board of trustees.”

“And you hunted him,” Emily said, the awe clear in her voice.

“I’ve spent three years tracking him across three continents,” Sarah said. “When I found out he was operating under Daniel’s name in San Francisco and was engaged to marry you, I knew I couldn't just go to the police. He had corrupted lawyers, fake identities, and offshore accounts. If I moved too early, he would disappear again into the wind. I posed as a luxury wedding photographer. I booked your wedding portfolio under a fake portfolio just to get inside his perimeter.”

Sarah reached into her camera bag on the floor and pulled out a small, heavy black object.

A Glock 19 semi-automatic pistol.

“Sarah, what are you doing?” Emily breathed, her eyes widening.

“I came here to make sure you didn't become his second victim,” Sarah said, checking the magazine with cold efficiency. “And I came to ensure my brother Daniel finally gets justice. Julian is upstairs right now, waiting for Arthur Pendelton to arrive with those trust documents. The moment you sign them, Julian will slip liquid fentanyl into your hot tea. The medical examiner will rule it an accidental overdose caused by the trauma of the cliff fall. By the time the toxicology report comes back in six weeks, Julian will be in Singapore with your family’s money.”

Emily’s spine straightened. The fear that had paralyzed her since she hung over that cliff suddenly burned away, replaced by an incandescent, white-hot fury.

She had been a pawn. She had been targeted, courted, manipulated, and almost murdered by a monster who thought she was just a fragile, naive rich girl.

“No,” Emily said, her voice dropping into a register of icy, lethal resolve. “He isn't going to Singapore.”

Sarah looked up, surprised. “Emily?”

“If you shoot him, you go to prison for murder,” Emily said, stepping closer to Sarah, her eyes burning like twin torches. “He gets an easy death, and your life is ruined. That isn't justice for Daniel. And it isn't justice for what he did to Vanessa.”

“Then what do you propose we do?” Sarah asked. “Arthur Pendelton is arriving in less than twenty minutes. Pendelton is a dirty corporate shark who’s in on the take.”

Emily smiled—a cold, terrifying smile that would have made her ruthless oil-baron grandfather immensely proud.

“Pendelton brought the trust paperwork,” Emily said. “And Julian thinks I’m a terrified, traumatized little girl who will do whatever her handsome hero tells her to do. We aren't going to run, Sarah. We’re going to walk right back into that penthouse... and we’re going to spring the trap.”
