Chapter 18 - The Boardroom Ambush

Forty-eight hours later, the story dominated international headlines.
*BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS SURVIVES MANSION EXPLOSION: BRIDESMAID ARRESTED FOR CONSPIRACY AND ATTEMPTED MURDER.*
Vanessa was being held without bail in a federal detention center, her shoulder stitched and her accounts seized. But the victory felt hollow. Julian Vance was still a ghost, drifting between international jurisdictions with hundreds of millions in untraceable cryptocurrency.
Emily walked into Hayes Tower on Monday morning, refusing to show an ounce of weakness.
Her left arm was supported by a silk sling, hiding the severe burns and lacerations. Her face was pale, but her lips were painted in blood-red lipstick. She wore an impeccably tailored black Chanel pantsuit, striding through the marble lobby with the lethal poise of an empress going to war.
Sarah walked beside her, carrying a leather briefcase packed with forensic accounting documents.
"Julian’s plane didn't land in Europe," Sarah briefed her in low tones as the executive elevator ascended. "He executed a mid-air redirect. The transponder went dark over the Caribbean. But our banking contacts flagged an anomalous transaction: twenty million dollars wired this morning into a holding company linked to Hayes Petroleum stock."
Emily’s eyes narrowed. "He’s trying a hostile takeover?"
"Worse," Sarah said gravely. "He’s using an insider to call an emergency shareholder vote to strip you of your executive powers."
The elevator doors chimed and slid open onto the top floor.
Emily strode toward the boardroom. The two security guards at the door immediately pushed them open.
Inside, the entire board of directors was assembled. Twelve men and women in power suits, their faces tight with unease.
At the head of the long conference table sat Emily’s own uncle, Richard Hayes—her father’s younger brother, a man who had long resented being passed over for the leadership of the trust.
"Emily," Richard said, standing up with an expression of feigned sympathy. "My dear, you should be in the hospital. Look at you. You’ve been through an unspeakable trauma."
"Sit down, Richard," Emily commanded, walking to the foot of the table. Sarah placed the briefcase on the surface, opening it with two loud clicks. "Before I have security throw you out of your own office."
Richard’s sympathetic smile vanished, replaced by an ugly sneer. "The board has convened an emergency session, Emily. In light of your recent... mental instability, the public scandals, and the violent attacks following you, the board has voted to invoke the incapacity clause of your father’s trust."
"On whose authority?" Emily challenged, her voice ringing clear and dangerous.
"On the authority of our newest majority shareholder," Richard smirked, turning to the large video teleconference screen mounted on the wall. "Allow me to introduce our primary venture partner."
The screen blinked to life.
Emily’s heart turned to ice.
On the screen was not Julian Vance.
It was an elderly woman, impeccably dressed in diamonds and tweed, sitting in an ornate Parisian drawing room. Her hair was silver, her posture regal, and her eyes possessed the exact same chilling, predatory shade of ice-blue as Julian's.

"Hello, Emily," the woman said, her voice dripping with Old World aristocratic menace. "I believe you’ve been looking for my son."
