Chapter 19 - The Matriarch of Monsters

The boardroom descended into absolute, suffocating silence.

"You're his mother," Emily whispered, the pieces violently slotting together in her mind.

The syndicate wasn't just a corporate racket. It was an aristocratic dynasty of predators, operated like an organized crime syndicate disguised under centuries of European nobility.

"My name is Baroness Helene Vance," the woman spoke, sipping tea from fine Limoges porcelain. "For three generations, my family has corrected a fundamental flaw in global capitalism: we relieve weak, sentimental heirs of fortunes they never earned."

"You murdered Eleanor Sterling. You murdered Marie Dupont. You killed all of them!" Emily slammed her uninjured hand onto the table, glaring directly into the camera lens.

"They were collateral in a financial acquisition," the Baroness replied smoothly, without a shred of human warmth. "And you, Emily, were meant to be the most lucrative acquisition of all. But you proved unusually... resilient. And you made a critical error: you injured my Julian’s pride."

Richard Hayes cleared his throat nervously, adjusting his tie. "Helene’s consortium has acquired forty-two percent of the floating shares of Hayes Petroleum through off-market dark pool purchases, Emily. Combined with my shares, we now control fifty-one percent of the voting stock. As of this moment, you are terminated as CEO."

Emily looked at Richard. The man who had bounced her on his knee at Christmas, the man who had given the eulogy at her father’s funeral.

"You sold our family out for thirty pieces of silver, Uncle Richard?" Emily asked quietly.

"He sold it for sixty million dollars in an unnumbered Swiss account," Sarah interrupted, spinning her laptop around to face the board. "An account that federal investigators, the SEC, and Interpol are currently freezing as we speak."

Richard’s face drained of blood. "What?"

"Did you really think we didn't track the money from Vanessa's phone, Richard?" Sarah smiled with savage satisfaction. "Vanessa didn't just confess. She sang like a canary the moment federal prosecutors laid out thirty years in ADX Florence for domestic terrorism. She gave us the routing numbers. She gave us your signature on the offshore Cayman escrow agreement."

Suddenly, the heavy boardroom doors were thrown open.

Four armed federal agents, flanked by the San Francisco Police Department, stepped into the room.

"Richard Hayes," the lead agent announced, flashing a badge. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate espionage, and high-level fraud. Place your hands behind your back."

Richard backed away, knocking his chair over, but two agents seized him, slamming his chest against the glass conference table and snapping steel cuffs around his wrists.

On the screen, Baroness Helene watched the arrest without blinking. Her cold expression didn't waver.

"A minor setback, Emily," the Baroness said, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "Richard was a blunt instrument. But you forget where this game is being played. You think you've won because you hold the board?"

"I hold the company," Emily replied coldly, leaning toward the camera. "And I'm coming to Paris to tear your little dynasty down to the foundations."

May you like

"You won't make it across the Atlantic, little girl," the Baroness smiled—a grotesque, razor-thin smile. "Look outside your window."
