Chapter 7 - Chloe Finally Reveals Her PriceChloe contacted me two days later.

Not Luca.
Me.
She requested a meeting at a coffee shop near West Hartford.
I nearly refused.
Rachel told me to go, but not alone.
An investigator sat several tables away.
Chloe arrived wearing sunglasses despite the gray weather.
She didn't apologize.
Instead, she placed her phone on the table.
“Luca lied to both of us.”
“We're not the same.”
“I know.”
That answer surprised me.
Chloe admitted she had initially approached Luca because of Vance Global.
After being fired years earlier, she blamed Arthur for destroying her career.
She later discovered Luca at a charity fundraiser.
Their relationship became personal.
Then profitable.
“He promised me everything,” she said.
“The company?”
“A new life.”
She laughed bitterly.
“I was stupid enough to believe him.”
“Did you alter Arthur’s trust?”
Her face changed.
“No.”
“Your name is in the metadata.”
“I opened it.”
“Why?”
“Luca sent it to me.”
My pulse quickened.
“He said it was already approved.”
“Did you modify it?”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Chloe stared at her coffee.
Finally, she whispered, “Ask Luca about Evan Rourke.”
The name meant nothing to me.
“Who is he?”
“Someone Luca owes money.”
“How much?”
May you like
Chloe looked at me.
“Enough to kill for.”
